GWYME family of Newland (General)
by jennyk, Monday, June 25, 2007, 08:35 (6363 days ago)
I have a birth certificate for Lydia Matthews born 17th March 1843 in Newland. Her mother is shown as Elizabeth GWYME. I have this Elizabeth with husband John Matthews on the 41,51,61,71,81 census, born c 1808 Newland she was buried 25th Feb 1882 at Newland. The first child was born c 1832. My problem is that I can find no other reference anywhere to the name GWYME. Does anyone else have a Gwyme please or access to Newland marriages c 1830??? Thanks. Jenny

It's an odd name isn't it? The only Gwyme I can find on the net is a town in Virginia! I wonder if it could be Gwynne - a good old Welsh name?

From GFHS Marriage Index:
21 June 1828 John MATHEWS married Elizabeth GWYNN by Banns at Newland
From IGI:
20 April 1806 Eliz GWIN baptised at Newland. Parents Wm. GWIN and Mary
18 June 1794 William GWYNNE married Mary AMBURY at English Bicknor.
There is an Ancestral File on the Family Search site which states that Elizabeth GWYNN was born 20 April 1806 at Broadwell, Coleford, Glos. 8 siblings are listed.

Wonder if someone could give advice please with William Gwynne again. Following up on the references that slowhands and Michael found I did an Ancestry search and came up with a connection. This kind person has allowed me access to his extensive research. However.......... on IGI there is an entry for William Gwynne showing his birth as Broadwell, Coleford 1769 and his marriage also as slowhands found to Mary Ambury also born Broadwell, in English Bicknor 1794. The Ancestry details have William Gwynne born 1770 in Mitchel Troy, Monmouthshire , then marrying Mary Ambury 1794.
I suppose what I am asking is, is it possible that there were two William Gwynne's born about the same time, one in Mitchel Troy and the other in Broadwell. I think, if so, it would make sense that Mary Ambury married the Broadwell one. I don't want to add the details to my tree until I am sure. How can I check please?

I think it was probably Mike John's website that you looked at. I think he's absolutely right. William and George Gwynne (brothers) married Mary and Anne Ambury (sisters). The Gwynne family came from Mitchel Troy. I spent a lot of time searching for my 3 x great grandfather William Gwynne and Mike's is the only solution I can accept.

Hi Mary, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. As a relative beginner I was eager to get reassurance that I was making the right connection. I do appreciate input from those more experienced!!!!!
