South Wales August 15th 1933 gives an account of how my mother's brother, James
Henry Powell was killed riding a motor bike on the Tewksbury to Gloucester road
"on that part which was not in general use, having been replaced by a by-pass
near the turning to Wainlode Hill"

He was in collision with a horse drawn wagon driven by 16 year old Henry Thomas
Smith, son of John C. Smith of Garden Orchard Badgeworth. There were 9
passengers in the wagon but no one was injured except my uncle and even his
pillion passenger was not hurt.

People present at the inquest were police inspector T.A. James, Mr Harold
Langley-Smith representing the owner of the wagon and my grandfather (James's
father) who said that his son was going to spend a holiday with some friends at
50 Sweetbriar Street, Gloucester, having driven up from Newbridge Monmouthshire.

That'll be the stretch between Coombe Hill , Leigh and Twigworth.

I guess the most likely spot is the Norton / Cold Elm stretch, I'm sure the old Tewkesbury road went the short distance into Cold Elm ( Bishops Norton / Wainlode Hill junction) before the new road was built.

Thank you Slowhands for sending that information. Until I read the newspaper account I believed that the accident took place much nearer home in Monmouthshire.
Thanks again
