Milo LLOYD (General)
by byuscavage, Sunday, July 29, 2007, 08:46 (6329 days ago)
My greatgrandfather, Milo Lloyd, was born in about 1837 to, according to his obituary, Lewis and Maria Lloyd in a town which I cannot find in the UK. I have found a Milo Lloyd born to parents of the same name from the Forest of Dean area. I have followed him the in census including his marriage to Ann (Halfour) and the birth of his children. They lived in Newland, Coleford, and Christ Church, I believe. The 1871 census, states that he went to America. The 1881 UK census states that a woman matching Ann's desription was a widow.
The only immigration record I can find for a Milo was for 1873, which first makes me wonder where he was for 2 years.
My Milo married in the US and had a family. One daughter had the same name as the English Milo's siter- Therza. My Milo named a daughter Elizabeth- the same as the English Milo.
My Milo would not discuss his backround and would only say that he was the "black sheep" of the family dispite the fact that he was quite religious.
It certainly appears that these are the same men. I am searching for any descendants of Milo's English family in the hope that there is some oral tradition that might explain why this family may have separated.
Many thanks for your help in advance.
Bonnie

Milo appears to be stray for 12 years between 1861 and your 1873 record.
Its possible he travelled to and from America , perhaps returning to encourage his family to cross the Atlantic (?).
Perhaps he was the Black sheep only because he choose to return to America and start a new family(?).
Much speculation !

Thanks so much for the quick reply. You furnished me with items I didn't have, including the info on his father and his own baptism. No wonder I couldn't find the one census with the name spelled "Loyd"!
I have a few theories on this separation. Perhaps by the time he got money to send for them, they decided they didn't want to go. Maybe she never wanted to go in the first place. I find it interesting that she lists herself as a widow in one census. I wonder if she stopped hearing from him or perhaps this was their way of ending a relationship that could not be fixed because they couldn't agree on location. From what I know of him, he does not seem to be the sort to easily condone divorce.
I have been watching the flooding in England with great sympathy. We have had this scale tragedy in this area 30 years ago. My heart goes out to these people.
Are you a part of the Lloyd family? I will be sharing this info with my cousins here and I know they too will be appreciative of your help.

Mike,
This is great information on the children and especially Elizabeth. I am descended from his other Elizabeth- assuming this 2 marriage theory is correct. I just can't see how it can be anything else though.
Thank you so much for you help. I am brand new to this forum so forgive me if I ask an odd question. Are you also "slowhands"? I don't want to be repeating myself in replies but I did not understand why both names appear in my left blue column.

I have no connection with the Lloyd family and I am not Slowhands. But Slowhands and I have one thing in common - we were born in the Forest of Dean and we contribute to this website.
In the event you do not have the marriage of Milo's parents:
From GFHS Marriage Index:
15 December 1827 Lewis LLOYD married Maria EVANS by Banns at Newland Parish Church. Both are described as being from the Hundred of St Briavels which means they were living on extraparochial land.
Lewis LLOYD's burial has been given. This is the burial of Maria:

Dear Mike,
I am sorry that you are not a cousin but am very pleased to make the aquaintance of someone so interested in their heritage. The Forest of Dean area, from what I see in researching, seems like a lovely place. Perhaps when I win that elusive lottery, I will go there.
Thanks for the additional information. If they had Christian events at Christ Church, Newland Parish Church, and Coleford Cemetary, would they have been part of the Church of England or are these some other denomination? I am also assuming that because they were extraparocial in their geographic location that this had no influence on their church membership. Is that correct? I have been researching the geographic, ecclesiastic, and political boundries of England with some success but sometimes the cultural issues are not in black and white.
Best wishes,
Bonnie

I am sorry that you too are not a long lost cousin but my cousins and I here are very appreciative of your interest and love of your roots. The Forest must be a wonderful place.
I have researched the tin plate industry there a little. Am I correct in assuming that this family was probably a part of a factory type industry as opposed to having a shop of their own?
My best to you,
Bonnie

that you too are not a long lost cousin
we still may be just need to keep searching backwards and sideways !
By today's standards the scale of industry was small. Major tinplate activity was at Redbrook and Lydbrook ( at least closest to Coleford / Berry Hill)
also at Lydney, Parkend and Hawkwell

Hello Bonnie
I've just discovered your message and I have Milo Lloyd in my family tree. He emigrated to the USA in 1870 and 8 years later married Elizabeth Bottoms (my ancestor) who emigrated in 1867. These are their known children; Robert, Henry, Elizabeth Jesse, Sarah, Kerziah, Thirza and Mary Jane. Milo died 10 July 1918 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He was known as "Moses" because "he slept on his hands and knees. Knew the Bible from front to back. Was able to read music and played the violin" I wonder if he felt guilty leaving a large family in the UK???
By coincidence we've arranged a short break in the Forest of Dean later this year!

Glad to hear you are going to the Forest of Dean. It sounds like a lovely place.

Hello Bonnie
I'm another one..!! Jessie's grandparents were Thomas and Mary Bottoms who lived in County Durham and had about 11 children including Robert – my Gt Gt Grandfather (Jessie's uncle). I have a photo of him and also a newspaper article about him. I don't know how much you know about Thomas but he was killed in a horse drawn railway accident when Elizabeth (Bottoms) was only 4 years old. If you contact me I can send all the information I have (dollybeck @ aol .com don't include the spaces – they are supposed to fool the hackers!).
Milo (allegedly) told everyone that his wife was 'Lady in Waiting' to the Queen of England who sacked her for marrying a Welsh commoner. He was buried in July 1918 in Trucksville, Cedar Crescent Cem. Pennsylvania.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
