by David Potter, Wednesday, August 01, 2007, 10:26 (6326 days ago)

Please can I ask for assistance locating marriage records for my 4th Great Grandfather Richard Cook(e) Born circa 1811, Ruardean. He had a son James Cooke born 1833. It highly likely Richard married a Maria ? in the FOD area. I have search the FOD database but cannot locate any Maria on marriage records.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Regards David

Thank you Slowhands and ChrisW

regarding the IGI record - can you help explain wht this record does not appear in the FOD Parish Record Database? Could it be these records are not transcribed yet?

Be careful using some IGI records as fact

Richard Cook married Maria (?) in 1835 at Ruardean Hil

Looking at this IGI Marriage record on the LDS site, I noticed that it was
submitted by a member of the LDS.

A lot of information on the IGI is submitted by members of the LDS. You have to
be very careful in using this information as fact as very often people submit
information on assumption and this can send other researchers in the wrong
drection as it seems could be the case in this instance.

Mentioning Ruardean Hill is also a bit of a give away that it is incorrect. He no
doubt lived at Ruardean Hill but the parish church is just called Ruardean. The
village of Ruardean is a little distance away from Ruardean Hill.

This is the kind of thing that happens. I person looks at at Census with Richard
Cook on it living at Ruardean Hill, he notices the name of his wife is Maria and
that the first child was born in certain year. He then subtracts one year from
the birth year of the first child and their assumption is Richard Cook married
Maria (?) in 1835 at Ruardean Hil.

A number of children from this marriage were baptised in a Non conformist church:
Ebenezer Chapel 2 Feb 1842 COOK Maria Richard Maria Ruardean Collier
Ruardean Chapel 1 Apr 1846 COOK Mary Richard Maria Ruardean Collier
Ruardean Chapel 16 Aug 1848 COOK Emma Richard Maria Ruardean Collier
Bible Christian Chapel Ruardean 30 Mar 1853 COOK Richard Richard Moriah Ruardean Curior
Ruardean Chapel 20 Jun 1855 COOK Martha Richard Maria Ruardean Collier

It would appear that the births of these children were registered as follows:

Births Mar 1842
Cooke Maria Ross 26 191

Births Mar 1846
Cooke Mary Ross 26 227 or 229

Births Sep 1848
Cooke Emma Ross 26 238

Births Mar 1853
Cook Richard Ross 6a 420

Births Jun 1855
Cooke Martha Ross 6a 428

Obtaining a birth certificate should give the maiden name of the mother and hopefully will help lead to the marriage.

Hi Mike

I have tried to locate these baptism records on the FOD database, but I can't find them? Did you use a different database?

Many thanks.

The baptisms are taken from a GFHS (Gloucestershire Family History Society) transcription. You can purchase it on CD from the Society. Details at:
http://www.gfhs.org.uk/products.htm

You will also find them listed in the Genealogical Database on the Gloucestershire Archives website at:

Best wishes
