Phelps family (General)

by Jean Herbert @, Leeds Yorkshire, Thursday, August 02, 2007, 09:22 (6325 days ago)

I have "lost" one of my Phelps. I found John Phelps on the 1871 Census but after this cannot trace the family. Does anyone know where they went or did they leave the country. Below is the information shown on the 1871 Census. Please note that Henders Land is also spelt Hinders Lane and am not certain which is the correct spelling. Any help appreciated and updates welcome from anyone else researching the Phelps ancestry. Regards Jean Herbert.

1871Census Hinders Lane Gloucestershshire
RG10, piece 2602, folio 31, page 15, GSU roll 835278
Address: Little Dean Hill
John Phelps Head occ: Coal Miner age 31 born abt 1840 East Dean
Charlotte Phelps Wife age 30 born abt 1841 East Dean
May Phelps Dau age 8 born abt 1863 Henders Lane
Alfred Phelps Son age 5 born abt 1866 Henders Lane

Would you expect them to be with Hale's, Brain's or Grindles of Collafield ??

1881
James Brain abt 1801 Collafield Head Westbury On Severn - East Dean Gloucestershire
Mary Brain abt 1806 Brierley, Gloucestershire, England Wife Westbury On Severn - East Dean Gloucestershire
Simeon Brain abt 1851 Collafield, Gloucestershire, England Son Westbury On Severn - East Dean Gloucestershire
Alice Phelps abt 1871 Collafield Niece Westbury On Severn - East Dean Gloucestershire
Silas Phelps abt 1861 Collafield Nephew Westbury On Severn - East Dean Gloucestershire

in 1871 Silas Phelps is living here with his grandparents.

< Hinders Lane is "correct", Henders is a transcription issue >

I suspect the BRAINs as John PHELPS married Charlotte BRAIN at Flaxley on 24 December 1860. See Parish Registers on this site.

A search of FreeBMD suggests Charlotte died in 1872:

PHELPS Charlotte 31 Westbury S. 6a 146

BRAIN + PHELPS +HERBERT

Well Slowhands and Michael Gwilliam, you've really done it this time. At the moment I am working on the Phelps family, or I was until I read the information you kindly posted in reply to my post. You found my missing Phelps and inadvertantly answered another question which has been puzzling us for years. We often wondered if the Brain line in our tree had anything to do with the murder in America of Enos Brain and it seems that he was the brother of Charlotte Brain, who married the John Phelps I am currently researching. This has caused some excitment in the family - an interesting occurance not sure about previous to your assistance. Do you ever sleep?
Having found the relevant census returns, 1871 census states that Silas Phelps is the grandson of James Brain and on 1881 shows Silas again with the addition of Alice Phelps, shown this time as nephew and niece. They are definately the children of John and Charlotte Phelps as shown on other census.
Another query. Could you please give correct spelling of Cole Fields, Colafield and other variations?
English/Welsh Bicknor. I have come across this place several times and find it confusing. Is it a border town, with one half in England and one in Wales? Sometimes given as Welsh Bicnor or Bicknor.
Have just read with interest some other posts by members also researching Herbert/Brain/Phelps families and when I have sorted out who I am next researching, I will contact them. Regards Jean Herbert

Could you please give correct spelling of Cole Fields, Colafield and other variations?

My preference is COLLAFIELD

Its a very small hamlet north along the ridge of Littledean Hill as it descends down towards Green Bottom.

Edge Hills is nearby.

The area is home to what I have dubbed the "east dean " branch of the Grindles, the line crosses Brain and Hale

Thanks for the information Slowhands. Now could you explain the bit about English and Welsh Bicknor? Regards Jean Herbert

Bicknor's

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Sunday, August 05, 2007, 00:56 (6322 days ago) @ Jean Herbert

Welsh Bicknor is today in Herefordshire, although historically Monmouthshire.

It lies across the river Wye from English Bicknor and Lydbrook.

Welsh Bicknor is associated with the Vaughan family who were Catholic and held Courtfield. Courtfield is "supposed" to be the location where Henry V was brought up before becoming King and going on to Agincourt, others claim he was born at Courtfield.

The Vaughan family is also associated with Ruardean.

The "nor" part of Bicknor is thought to refer to the River bank.

Message for Bill White. You contacted me regarding the Brain family's participation in WW1 and WW2. Sorry I cannot help you with this one as I am only now trying to slot into place all the Brain and Phelps ancestors into my tree, having just discovered them via this forum. Good luck in your search. Regards Jean Herbert
