Forest of Dean Pits - Records of Miners (General)

Are there any records left of who worked in which mine in the FOD?

I'm looking for info re my gg grandfather, Maynard Porter, son of Arabella Yemm and John Porter. He lived on Plump Hill and was a miner. Is there any chance of finding out which pit he worked in, through employee records/accident/illness lists?
Before the 1901 census he and his family moved to Chilvers Coton, near to Nuneaton where his occupation is given as
Coal Miner.

Any leads appreciated

Checked the Free miner records ( on CD) and he is not listed ( also checked Maynard as a surname just in case :-) )

The nearest mines would have included :-Edge Hill
Fair Play
Tingles
Inkerman
Hawkwell
Newbridge
Speedwell
Northern United
etc

Men walked long distances to work and later were transported.

Thanks for the info Slowhands

Family history says that Maynard Porter walked 4 miles to the pit and earned 17 shillings per week. In the winter he would drink a pennysworth of rum to give him strength for the walk.

I'll get the map out and see what is in a four mile radius of Plump Hill. It might give me a hint as to where he worked. Not taking the family lore as gosple!
