Morgan & Worgan (General)

by aidansrest, Monday, August 06, 2007, 08:49 (6321 days ago)

Hello,
I'm trying to find any trace of George Morgan born 1817 in Coleford, son of James Morgan and Ann(e)Wood. He married Mary Ann Worgan, born 1815, on 8/2/1840.
I can find them both on the 1841 census living close to George's parents and George's brother, Henry Morgan, born 1822, (my grandfatherx3) and his wife, Maria.
There were at least three children of the marriage:
Amelia born 1843
Benjamin Parkes born 1846
Leah born 1848

However, I can find no trace of the family at all after the 1841 census. Can anybody tell me what happened to them, or better still find them?!

Thanks!
Sue

George MORGAN 1815 Coleford -> Wales ?

Hi Slowhands,
Thanks for your reply. I have seen those census returns with George Morgan and family on and have a strong gut feeling that they are not the family I'm after.
Mary Ann could of been Maria but her year of birth is totally wrong, Mary Ann was born 1815.
Benjamin also appears as Benjamin James when he was Benjamin Parkes.
Just small points I know but enough to put me off!

I think Lanvrechon and Lanvreola are modern day Llanfrechfa near Cwmbran (transcribed in the 1871 census as Cumbraes). All are in the Parliamentary constituency of Torfaen, South Wales.

My ancestor Sarah Morgan from Newland married John Phillips at Llanfrechfa on 10th September 1836. There were extensive tin, iron and coal mines nearby and hence the attraction to Forest of Dean miners. Amazingly, Sarah Morgan's gg grandfather William Morgan (bap 26th June 1704 Breem, Newland) was my ggggg father along a completely different line. A case of cross border in-breeding?

Can you tell me who the father of your George Morgan is? It is likely we are related through the Morgan line you can find on this excellent web site under Miscellaneous Documents (Thomas Morgan born circa 1645).

Hi Chris,
George Morgan's father was James Morgan, a collier, and his mother was Ann(e)Wood.
George's brother, Henry Morgan, born in 1822 in Coleford, is my grandfather x3. Henry married Maria Hamblin on 24/12/1840 and their first child, Moses, born 1843 is my grandfather x2.
Moses eventually left the Forest of Dean area and migrated North, working at Usworth colliery, then at Newbattle colliery in Dalkeith, Scotland, before settling in Durham City.
One of his son's, John, born c1882/4 (still can't track his birth certificate down as the family moved around so much!)is my g grandfather. He married in 1903 and his first child, John William Moses Morgan born 1904 was my grandfather.

George MORGAN 1817 Coleford / Milkwall

by aidansrest, Tuesday, August 07, 2007, 03:09 (6320 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Slowhands,
Thanks again for the information. I had found George and Mary on 1841 census as they are on the same census page as George's parents, James and Ann, and also, his brother, Henry and wife Maria.
I'd also located the record of George's marriage to Mary Ann and Amelia's, Benjamin's and Leah's baptisms,
thanks for your help though,
Sue

I guessed you had, it was more to enhance the base note with extra names / places / details just in case someone else reading hadn't made the connection :-)

Hello Sue,

I have just come across some of your messages re Henry Morgan & Moses Morgan. I am researching my wife's lines, and Henry Morgan is her gg grandfather; her g grandmother being Leah, sister of Moses. I have a fair bit of information about her. You seem to be much more advanced in your research than I am, but if Leah's line is of any interest to you, let me know.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
I have heaps of information on the Morgan family and quite abit on Leah, Henry Watkins and their family. I know she died too at a relatively young age in 1882 (34 I think). But I would love to know more!
I can give you alot of info on her brother, Moses as he is my gg grandfather and also Leah and Moses parents, Henry Morgan and Maria Hamblin.

If you can reply to me at my email address I'll be happy to send you want I have and would love to learn more about Leah,

Can you explain why the parents of Henry Morgan (the Henry Morgan who married Maria Hamblin on 24/12/1840) are James Morgan and Ann Batton and not James Morgan and Ann Wood?

Hi
We have come to this conclusion mainly due to the ages of James and Ann, Ann always appears older, and an Ann Batten was born in Lyndey during 1777 which would match with her census age and her age at death. She married a James Morgan in 1806.
Also on the census returns Ann's birthplace is 'Lydney'.

Sorry this is brief but I'm at work and don't have my notes with me!

How happy I am to find your query - I am a 2ndgr. granddaughter to Mary Anne Worgan and George Morgan! Their daughter, Leah, is my gr. grandmother - she married a Clarke. The Morgans emigrated to Canada about 1850 or so, and lived their lives in Sarnia, Ontario. I have considerable information regarding these families, but have little about their families earlier in the Coleford area - PLEASE contact me - Alice-Jean McFarlin, thank you.
