I have George Meek in my family tree, he is "connected" but not related to me. I tend to follow the siblings & parents of spouses. In this case George Meek's brother Elijah married Ann Roberts, their daughter Rhoda married George Trigg, who is related to me, also George Meek's mother Sarah Tippins had a brother William amongst her 9 siblings, William married Letitia Jenkins and they had 11 children including Sarah who married Timothy Baldwin, who again is related to me. There are other "connections" leading to relations amongst the descendants of the other siblings of William Tippins.

Getting back to George Meek (son of Moses Meek & Sarah Tippins)I have his first marriage as being to Dinah Thomas, daughter of James Thomas, they married 24.8.1858 at the Forest Church, Drybrook. I wonder if Dinah Thomas & Emma Thomas were sisters, or at least related. The census for George & Dinah are :

Hi Jim i wonder if you have come across James Meek the father of Moses Meek married to Sarah Tippins i have him on their marriage cert and Georges birth cert his wifes name is Mary i have a wedding for a James Meek to Mary Gagg 1796 Mary Gagg was baptised on 3rd sep 1775 and was the daugther ofWilliam and AnnGagg but i cannot find anything more about him regards Wilfred

I do indeed know a little about the ancestors of Moses Meek; his parents were as you say James Meek 1774 & Mary Gagg baptised as you say, 3.9.1775, they married Newland 29.12.1796. Mary Gagg was the daughter of William Gagg 1744 & Ann Yemm 1751, married 2.7.1769, Ann Yemm was the daughter of John Yemm & Mary. William Gagg 1744 was the son of William Gagg 1718 & Margaret, William Gagg 1718 was the son of Elizabeth Gagg and his baptism record is shown as "Son of a stranger". William Gagg 1718 & Margaret also had a son John Gagg 1751 who married Priscilla Meek 1753. Priscilla Meek 1753 was the daughter of one of my 6 times grandparents George Meek 1714 & Margaret who had 9 children, including Lydia Meek my 6 times great aunt who married James Brain my 5 times great uncle. George Meek & Margaret's daughter Lucy 1743 became one of my 5 times great grandparents, due to her marriage to John Marfell 1731, they had 12 children but I think I had better stop before I send you to sleep !!

Hello Wilfred & Jim,

I have worked this part of my wife's family tree and agree with most of jim's data. The one bit I'm not sure of is which Ann Yemm married William Gagg 1744 at Ruardean in July 1769; the 1746 Ann (parents William & Sarah) or the 1751 Ann (parents John & Mary)
a) the flow thro of names of siblings of the respective Ann Yemm's as Gagg children is not strong.
b) at the 1769 marriage the one Ann would have been 18 and the other 23.
c) the wills of William and Ann Gagg do not provide any helpful clues.
d) William Gagg was buried in 1809, age 65 thus giving a YOB of 1744. This suggests a good knowledge of his own age and YOB.
Ann Gagg was buried in June 1813, age 65, a widow. This suggests a YOB of 1747.

So, if there is a strong case for discounting age data and selecting the 1751 Ann Yemm, I am more than happy to be persuaded.

Incidently, I have a number of these either / or decisions awaiting that key bit of missing info !!

Sorry I missed this posting and have just noted it due to Slowhands recent update posting. I think the parents of Ann Yemm were John Yemm & Mary, with Ann being baptised 20th April 1751 Ruardean.

Dinah Thomas' parents were James 1801 St Briavels and Sophia 1811 East Dean. They had a daughter Emma Thomas, aged 4mo on 1851 census:

Right again !! Emma & Dinah were 2 of the 10 children of James Thomas and Sophia Guest.

Both married the same George Meek. Dinah who married him on 24 Aug 1858, died 1st Dec 1871 and then Emma married him 28 Dec 1871

I have tried to respond to your email to me, but even though I used the "reply" facility and had therefore not misinterpreted your email address, it was nevertheless rejected by your ISP due to the address.

You had been confused by the 1871 Census entry so I had attached an image of the actual entry for 1861 & 1871.

Please note the entry for 1871 posted by slowhands is wrong (unusual for slowhands) it is definitely Dinah not Sarah on the 1871 census.

I usually 'just' lift the Ancestry transcription, and look at the full image if a discussion follows :-)

I will often go back and [suggest a correction]; I have felt that the Ancestry transcription is useful for those who want to find the image in Ancestry for themselves at a later date.
