The GOODE / ANNETTS family (General)
by tonycook, Saturday, November 17, 2007, 07:26 (6218 days ago)
I am looking for the siblings of my Grandfather. He is Sydney Charles Goode born in 1885 His father was Amos Goode b c1860 and his mother Sarah Bennett married in 1877. Having checked census returns for 1891 I can find no trace of the family after their marriage although I can find the registration of Sydney's marriage to Alice Maud Annetts in 1909 both at that time living in Steam Mills. In the mid 1920's they moved to Yorkshire. Is it possible someone has the information I'm looking for. I would be most grateful for any help.

Brilliant as ever, the information in your reply has connected two people already in my Family tree. Although I cannot help Tony with more information, I do have Sidney Charles Goode in my family tree as a "connected" rather than a related person; Amos Goode's parents were George Goode & Sarah Ann Penn. I believe that Sarah Ann Penn gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Sarah Jane Penn 10.5.1850 in Union Workhouse Ross, this Sarah Jane married John Colwell 8.10.1844, St Nicholas Church Gloucester, their daughter Kate married James Walter Hillman 26.12.1898 Cinderford and their daughter Edith Lilian married someone who is a relative, but we are now getting toward more recent times and I will stop being specific. However, any confirmation from slowhands regarding the earlier information concerning Sarah Ann and Sarah Jane Penn would be appreciated.
The other person in my tree that slowhands has connected is; John Annetts 1853 brother George 1844 married Sarah Cinderey, daughter of George Cinderey & Elizabeth Wilkes. Sarah Cinderey's brother George married Abiah Marfell, and her brother John married Elizabeth Brain, daughter of Simeon Brain & Ann Marfell.

GOODE - Marfell ?

Hi Slowhands
I too had wondered about this, but cannot find a Marfell connection, but thanks for the thought. Any help you can give regarding Sarah Ann & Sarah Jane Penn would be very much appreciated. The fact that Kate Colwell's parents had turned out to be John Colwell & Sarah Jane Penn had completely altered a very good Family History friend's lineage. The scepticism we have is that there is 4 years between the illegitimate birth of Sarah Jane Penn 10.5.1850 in Union Workhouse and her marriage to George Goode 4.5.1854, yet he is shown as the father.

Hi Slowhands
Thanks very much for the information. I have checked out the 1851 Census for widow Sarah Penn and see that there are members of the Sims family with her and next door. However, I tend towards your Thomas Penn & Mary as per the link in your other reply. To tie in with this, I found a marriage for Thomas Penn & Mary Mabe on the F o D web site 30.4.1820 Much Marcle, plus a baptism for Sarah Penn 1.3.1825 Walford, which fits more closely with the information we already have.

I wish I could pin Sarah from Walford down in 1851, there is a Sarah PENN from Walford as a Servant at an Inn in Ross, aged 34 (?) could be 24

Hi Slowhands
Thanks for the info, this could be her but by 1851 she had her illegitimate daughter Sarah Jane Penn born 10.5.1850 in Union Workhouse Ross, I wonder where she was? Perhaps she was still in the workhouse - do you know how to access their records ?

Hi Slowhands
If Sarah Ann is the daughter of Thomas Penn & Mary Mabe (I know for sure, her father was Thomas), she would have had a sister Jane who was born in 1838 according to the 1841 Census :
1841 Bishopwood - Ruardean area
Thos Penn abt 1801 Ruardean
Mary Penn abt 1801 Ruardean
Ann Penn abt 1821 Ruardean
Thomas Penn abt 1825 Ruardean
