PRIEST Family Lydbrook (General)

by priest @, Sunday, November 18, 2007, 06:32 (6221 days ago)

I am searching for my husband's Grandmother EVELINE EVANGELINE PRIEST who was born in Lydbrook on 7th November 1885 and anything else about the family.
I have found out the following
Her Mother was Ellen Priest formerly Gwilliam nee Payne born 1842 in Long Marston and died in Lydbrook on 3.4.1898.
Her Father was John Samuel Priest born in 1838 in Coleford and died in Lydbrook on 10.4.1894. He was the Manager of the chemical works next to the Jovial Colliers P.H. In the 1891 census they were shown as living in a house between the Crown & Sceptre Inn and the Jovial Colliers Inn.
There were six children
Clara born 24.1.1871 in Bream who married Caleb Thomas on 15.7.1897 in Coleford
Charles James born 24.9.1874 in Lydbrook who married Mary Duberly on 26.3.1894 in Lydbrook
Annie born 4.1.1879 in Lydbrook
Ellen Emily born 19.11.1882 in Lydbrook who died in Lydbrook 7.3.1883 aged 4 months
Ellenor Daisy born 25.5.1884 in Lydbrook
EVELINE EVANGELINE PRIEST born 7.11.1885 Lydbrook

Father John died on 10.4.1894 in Lydbrook and his wife on 3.4.1898 in Lydbrook

All these details have been obtained from parish records. However I can find no records regarding EVELINE at all. Her information came from tracing her birth certificate.

That is all we know until Eveline who was unmarried at the time gave birth on the 3.2.1909 to a son Leonard John Priest (My husbands Father) in London Putney. Leonard was adopted we think at about 3 years old. We are now trying to find out what happened to Eveline by searching records of deaths.

Any information about this family would be so appreciated or any information about the chemical works where John S. Priest worked. We have no idea what happened to any of the younger children once orphaned.

We intend to come up to Lydbrook from Cornwall to see if we can at least locate the graves of John, Ellen and baby Ellen in the church of Holy Jesus Lydbrook. We have been trying to contact the vicar there with no success to see if there are any details of burial plots.

Any information would be so very much appreciated by us both

PRIEST Family Lydbrook

Just a suggestion about Eveline. With a middle name like Evangeline it is possible there were Salvation Army connections. This was the name of William Booth's daughter.

I am writing to Alison and Brian off list. I have quite a bit of information on the family up to 1900 as a result of the Gwilliam connection.

Hi working through my tree and the parish records I believe Williams 1st marriage was to Betsy Philips at Hewelsfield on 8/10/1831 and his brother Amos & sister Eliza were witnesses-more to follow as available.

Chemical Works - Naptha

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Sunday, November 18, 2007, 21:11 (6220 days ago) @ priest

The Forest Chemical works were linked to Wood ( Naptha , Charcoal etc) , Coal and Iron ( no surprises there then !)

BREAM Chemical Works
The oldest works, near Cannop bridge, were in use in 1835, and George Skipp, who manufactured lead acetate there in 1841, built similar works in the Oakwood valley near Bream in 1844.

LYDBROOK Chemical Works

( by Holy Jesus Church in Upper Lydbrook, site of the Old Forge and Lydbrook Valley Garage at some time ?)

At the Upper Lydbrook works, established in 1857, Samuel Russell produced naphtha in 1859

The Lydbrook factory, which also made foundry blackings, remained in use until c. 1933.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply in such great detail re the Priest family!
I am particularly pleased that you found Eveline's baptism notice and also the possible marriage. Thank you so much, it has given us much to do! I will try to let you know positive results if and when we find them.
All very new to us as we only started searching very recently and we have found out so much in such a little time!
Thanks again,

Update: successful search for Eveline Evangelina Priest

by priest @, Friday, February 01, 2008, 03:02 (6146 days ago) @ slowhands

On the 28th November, 2007 I posted a search for Eveline Evangelina Priest on the forum and received numerous replies and valuable advice from many. Eveline was my husband's grandmother about whom the family knew nothing as her son was adopted at an early age.
After much searching we now have traced many living relatives and even have the most wonderful photograph of her. Not only have we found Eveline but we now also have an enormous 'forest family' to keep us occupied for a very longtime!
None of this would have been possible without this wonderful site and people willing to help out and I thank you all so much. What we have found out with help from so many is beyond our wildest dreams and has now got me well and truly hooked.
Thank you all!
Alison

Hello
I am going to be visiting Lydbrook and I could try and look for any gravestones you wish.

My family of James are buried there and apparently there is a priest connection somewhere along the line.

I arrive in england on the 10th March but wont be going to Lydbrook for a month or two.

Let me know if you need any help.
