Alice KNIGHT born 1876, Newnham (General)
I am trying to sort out the forebears of ALICE KNIGHT.
I have a Certificate of Registry of Birth for Alice. She was born on 4th August 1876. The Cert is dated 7 September 1876 and states place of birth as Newnham. I have a Certificate of Marriage dated 7th October 1899. She married Arthur Paish, later a Gloucestershire cricketer, at St John the Evangelist, Clifton, Britol. Age is 23 yrs. Father, Thomas Knight's profession is stated as 'Engine Driver'.
The problem is this:-
I have an Alice Knight born on 27th August 1876 to Thomas and Harriet Knight of St White's FODFH rec_id 75600 entry 1218. However, I also have Thomas Knight's burial rec_id 55147 on 27 May 1876 several weeks before Alice's birth. Although Thomas was a railway footplateman, I would have expected a (Deceased) on the marriage certificate. So near yet so far?
Further complication:-
I have a Tom Knight and Mary Ann Manns married 28th February 1870 in Newnham FODFH rec_id 13879 entry 408. They raised a family in Newnham. They move to Cardiff. There is no entry in the 1881 Census for an 'Alice', just a significant(?) gap in the records for Roath in Cardiff. By the 1891 Census Alice was probably in Domestic Service in Bristol; she was working in Bristol before the wedding! Tom also became a railwayman and lived out his later life in Cardiff and would probably have been at the wedding; he was buried in Newnham in 1929.
Any guidance greatfully accepted.
