Hi A lot of our ancestors were miners in the Forest - can we find out if they were Freeminers?
James Aston b Oct 1825 Ruardean
Edward Aston b 26 Sept 1784 Birth Reg Newland but living in Coleford
Thomas Aston c 11 Dec 1747 Newland
Edward Aston c 15 May 1721 Newland (but living in COleford)
Edward Aston c 11 Jul 1681 Newland
Philip Aston b 1665 Newland?
And is it possible to find out if they were involved in any mining accidents?
I think your website is wonderful - I wouldn't have found any of these ancestors without you ...

Hi Slowhands
Thank you for that info - I'm also trying to confirm the parents of Edward Aston (possibly christened in Newland 15 May 1721 and married Patient in 1744). I understand the early Newland registers suffered from rats but you referred in Aug to an Index of Baptisms, Marriage and Burials 1670-1799 made in 18th and 19th centuries. Are these on the Forest website? or are you able to tell me where to find them? That would be a great help ... Best wishes Carolyn

I have Astons in my tree and have parents for a 1721 Edward as Edward & Sarah.
Edward bapt 1681 son of Philip & Maria. My line is via Richard Aston & Susan Evans
Your 2nd point was James 1825 son of Edward, he was son of Edward Aston & Susan Jones, who married Jane Smith daughter of James Smith & Sarah (have been unable to find a marriage not listed in the GFHS marriage index, so could be Monmouth. James is son of Henry Smith & Jane Evans.
I hope this helps,

Hi Gill
Thanks for the information and I'm very pleased to hear from a descendant of Richard Aston and Susan. I suspected that Edward (1681) and Sarah might be the parents of Edward (1721)(Dad of your Richard and our Thomas) but I can't find any birth details for Edward (1721) - there doesn't seem to be any records of his birth at Newland but he might have been eaten by the rats!
I don't know much about Richard's descendants other than Richard and Susan had children Susannah (1775) Charlotte (1778) Amelia (1779) Betty (1781) Anne (1790) Wiliam (1792) Emmanuel (1787) and Thomas (1772)- is this right?

You enquired about the transcript 1670 - 1799. This has not been used yet to check the records on site, but I did check it for Aston baptisms around 1721 and found that no records existed from 1720-1723, there is also a 2 year gap in the parish register at the same time. The only remaining possibility is to check the IGI. I plan to photograph this sometime next year and to use it to update the Newland registers, but it is juist one of a long list of things to do!!

I have just had a look at the Mormon website (familysearch) and I find that you can borrow films of the Newland Bishops Transcripts through your local Mormon family History centre. I would recommend trying this, to find the nearest centre to you go to www.familysearch.org click on Library, then Family History Centres and fill in the form to find the one closest to you. I have used them in the past and always found them extremely helpful.

With reference to Grahams advice, the film no required to view BT's for Newland is 425476, I have veiwed this film not that easy to read and early stuff is in Latin.
You will find Edward Aston under Edvardous Assen for 1721 in IGI Familysearch.
A few years back you could search with an asterick in name box but this search does not work now. Another way to find all children for Edward & Sarah is to use the parents side. Putting in Edward Aston and Sarah the region, county and time frame will bring up their children the soundex does not bring up Assen so will need to do both searches.
Good luck....Gill

Hi Carolyn
I have a James Aston in my Family Tree born 20.10.1825 Ruardean baptised 25.6.1826 Ruardean he married Jane. The reason he is in my family tree is that his daughter Rhoda born West Dean 1864, died 23.5.1908, buried 28.5.1908 Ruardean was the first wife of John Hubert Marfell born 5.6.1861 son of Benjamin Marfell & Elizabeth Mason (picture on this web site)
James Aston was a Colliery Manager in 1881, see census data :

There is a CD available from Forest of Dean Local History Society which lists the Free Miners and details fatalities. On the CD there is a James Aston registered as a Free Miner 2.1.1875 Address Edge End, nr. Coleford ID 1404 aged 49 = born 1826. You will note another James Aston on the 1881 Census above, obviously not a son with a 10 year gap, but maybe a brother. Interestingly on the CD there is another James Aston Registered as a Free Miner 8.1.1875 Address Hawthorns nr. Drybrook ID 1439 aged 39 = born 1836. There are no fatality records for a James Aston on the CD.

Hi Slowhands
I also suspect this is the same James Aston, however there is no close connection between Aaron Marfell and Benjamin Marfell who was the father of John Hubert Marfell who married Rhoda Aston. Aaron & Benjamin Marfell were 2nd cousins twice removed. If he was in the household, I am afraid I didn't record the specific detail as per my notes :

Hi Slowhands
Thanks for all the information. I think the James Aston b 1826 living with the Marfells in 1841 is a different 'Aston' as our James Aston was living aged 15 with his mother, Susan, remarried to Henry Heath.
But I was interested to have all the info on the other James Aston b 1836 (son of James and Eliza)who married Harriet and I'll try and see where he fits in earlier.
Best wishes

Hi Jim
Thanks for the information, and I am very pleased to hear about Rhoda. I was aware of Rhoda - she is the sister of our Aston Grandfather James b 1858 ie the Great Aunt of my husband. I thought she was rather interesting as I believe although she was born on 5 Nov 1865 she was not christened until 14 Apr 1881 (Forest of Dean records). And I didn't know what happened to her after that - the photo of her in-laws is fascinating, are you descended from the Marfells?
And thanks for the info on James the Freeminer registered 2.1.1875 (my husband's Great Grandfather). I don't think the other James you mention is a close relative although he may well be related from way back (there are so many Astons in the Forest of Dean!)

Hi Carolyn
Yes I am connected to the Marfell family, my grandmother was Jane Kate Marfell, born Drybrook 27.7.1888 Drybrook - picture on the web site. With regard to Rhoda and John Hubert Marfell, I have the marriage certificates to both his wives, and can send you the Rhoda marriage certificate if you email me via the link here. The interesting thing is that one of the witnesses to his marriage to Rhoda Aston was Clara Yemm who became his second wife. Clara Yemm being the daughter of William Yemm and Lydia Marfell. Clara Yemm's first marriage was to Edward Dutton in 1885. If you want to be really morbid, I can also email you the gravestone images for Rhoda & Clara. The inscription for Rhoda reads "In fragrant memory of Rhoda wife of John Hubert MARFELL, died May23 1908, also of the above named who died Feb 28 1937 and of Nellie MARFELL, died July 2 1978 aged 80 years."

Hi Jim
Thanks for all the info - and the rather nice inscription for Rhoda 'In fragrant memory ...'. I'm trying to draw up a family tree for my sister in law's Xmas Present so I'm rather short of time and have to concentrate on the direct Aston line - but I keep getting side tracked with all the interesting people I meet along the way - (the Marfell clan in the website photo look a very handsome lot!)

Hi Jo How nice to hear from you! I've got Richard (1745)and Susannah's descendants on my tree ('The Aston Woodcutters')and I knew Richard (1816) m Phoebe Ann but I didn't know her surname was Morgan so that is very helpful. My husband is descended from Richard (1745)'s brother Thomas and Anne who have an enormous clan (all miners so 'The Aston Miners'). There's certainly a lot of Aston's in the Forest of Dean
