Beata BRAIN born abt 1834 maybe Collafield (General)
by Jean Herbert , Leeds Yorkshire, Friday, December 07, 2007, 01:50 (6199 days ago)
William Brain born abt 1806 married Sophia Annis born abt 1813. They were married 10 Oct 1831 in Flaxley. Only child found so far of this marriage is a Beata(various spellings of name) Brain born abt 1834 maybe Collafield.
Beta was found on the 1841 census with her parents and on subsequent census 1851 and 1861 with her father and his second wife Susannah nee Harris. (William and Susannah were married on 3 Dec 1846 Drybrook and had issue)
Trying to trace Beta after 1861, when she would have been abt 28. So far have not found a death for her father William or stepmother Susannah but did find an interesting entry for the 1891 census for Civil Parish Westbury on Severn. RG12, piece 2007, folio 123, page 2. The record seems to be some sort of institution and included on the list of inmates is a Beta Brain age 59. Not sure this is the correct person.
Interestingly, included in the long list are several people whose surnames appear in my tree: Bertha Yemm age 15 - Ann Trigg age 76 - Joseph Mason age 69 - Caroline Meek age 14 - Sarah Herbert age 21 - William Beddis age 15.
I did find a record of burial for a Beta Brain died age 62 in 1894.
If this is the correct person, can anyone tell me where she was in 1871 - 1881? Also, Slowhands, you are very good at interpreting names, can you tell me the meaning of the Beata? Family opinion seems to think it is a shortening of Beatrice but I do not feel this is plausible. Regards Jean Herbert

Beata was a common name in Germany. Its origin is Latin and means "blessed" as in beatify or beatification.

Hi Slowhands
This information could show up an error in my family tree. Whilst the dates of birth for William Brain 1785 vary, for instance his 1849 burial entry shows him as 71 = born 1778. Who do you think his parents are ? There is a William Brain baptised 5.8.1787 Ruardean son of William Brain and Ann Whittingham, but there is also a burial entry for this William 7.9.1810 Ruardean, son of William & Ann.
I have William Brain 1807 son of William Brain & Beata Beddis as married to (1) Sophia Annis married Flaxley 10.10.1831, with daughter Beata baptised 12.1.1834. I have him then married to Susannah Hayward 3.12.1846 Drybrook – witnesses Charles Hayward & Emily Brain
In my family tree I have a William Brain baptised 23.1.1803 son of James Brain & Hannah Blanch, married to Susannah, they have children Mary, Margaret & Jessie. I have no marriage for Mary, but Margaret married George Tyler with 2 children Jessie & Elizabeth. Jessie married Margaret Murrell and they had 11 children :
1851 Census
BRAIN William 46 Quarryman Little Deam
Susanna 28 Little Dean
Beata 17 East Dean
Mary 10 East Dean
Margaret 3 East Dean
Jessee 1 East Dean
1861 Census East Dean
William Brain 56 Ag Lab East Dean
Susannah wife 39 East Dean
Beata 20 East Dean
Margaret 14 East Dean
Jessie 12 East Dean
1871 Census East Dean 2601/47
William Brain wdr 67 Lab Little Dean
Beta dtr 37 Edgehill East Dean
Jessie 21 son Edgehill East Dean
Margaret Murrell mother 22 Newent
Elizabeth dtr 2 Edgehill East Dean
Catherine dtr 8 mths Edgehill East Dean
Jessie was killed in a Mine accident 2lst December 1897 - Foxes Bridge Mine.
So, going back to my original question, who are the parents of William Brain whose documented age varies between 1773 – 1785, who married Beata Beddis 1.1.1807.

hello Slowhands
I can't add much to your input as i struggle to read the fiche at Gloucester Archives. some little bits for your info are;-
Ann Morgan was bap 27 Nov 1685
her son James Brayne was bap 10 or 18? Feb 1724
James Brayne 1724 married an Elizabeth (or Eliza) c1743 but I'm not sure if it was Elizabeth Gardiner. Another? Elizabeth Gardiner married another James Brayne at Littledean in 1783, maybe Ancestral Trails mixed the two ?
I can't help with the William Brayne question as I worked up through the James Brayne 19 Aug 1740 route

A little off track from the origional question of where Beta might have been in 1871 I know, but intriqued by the workhouse connection prompted me to visit to Gloucester Archives.
Beata's time in the workhouse is documented through out the Westbury Union statement of accounts for the years 1883 (half year to Michaelmus) to 1894 (half year to Lady Day) - found within the east Dean list of Indoor Paupers. So as you see it seems she reamined here for around 11 years, until her death.
The weekly cost of maintence per head in 1893 is noted as
including necessaries. s. d.
2 7 1/2
weekly cost of clothing 0 7 1/4
total cost 3 2 3/4
It is not clear why she entered the workhouse from these records, however it seems her father William may have been receiving outdoor relief from the parish for some of this time due to being infirm. (1888-1895)
ref 1888 Westbury Union statement of accounts through to 1895 (half year ending Michalmus)
It would apprear from these records that he was approx aged 78 when he died and was infirm, listed as living in either The Ruffet or Collamore.
Another small piece to the jigsaw!
