Parish Records St Briavels (General)
by alison, Saturday, December 22, 2007, 11:06 (6183 days ago)
I have found some of my family's Baptisms, Marriages and Burials on this site but some are missing eg my ggrandparents Thomas Williams and Amelia Walker's Marriage. It is listed in the bmd on ancestry as being ond 1878. Could the reason for this be that they married in one of the many chapels (in St Briavels area at the time) and not in the Church?
Any info much appreciated
Regards
Alison

Do you have the marriage cert ?
St Briavels would seem to be the likely church , but they may have married at another in the area.....

Hi
Thanks for replying.
I have sent off to Cinderford Register Office for the Marriage Certificate of Thomas Williams and Amelia Walker of St Briavels, bmd (OND 1878 Chepstow 11a 25) and they are having trouble finding it. Is it possible they married in a Register Office and where were the nearest Register Offices to this Vicinity?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated.
Regards
Alison

Strange - the Index page is typewritten and very clear - it is possible that an error occured when the Index was created.
So there should be a record to tell us were the marriage took place

Hi Slowhands
I have at last tracked the marriage certificate down for Thomas Williams and Amelia Walker in ond 1878. They were married at Chepstow Register Office and the Records are now kept at Abergavenny Register Office.
Thanks

I recently spent about 3 months of long lonely thursday nights going through the films of the church records for Mitcheldean looking for records regarding my ancestors Bayly, a task I have just discovered that I could have simply done on this site.
One thing I did notice that there was a significant period in that Churches records when people were getting married in particular from the Hundred of St. Briavels. Indeed it seemed the majoirty of the people using that church appeared to come from there which is suprising given the distance. I wonder if there was a period in which the local parish church was unavailable and thus the people were forced to go to Mitcheldean.
It might be worthwhile looking in parish records of this church for your missing ancestor

Parish Records St Briavels - missing records around 1690-1720

Researching the Williams family tree I have found that there are missing records further back (around 1690 - 1720 ish)
Were any of the records damaged at any point? Or lost somehow?
Thanks

There are no records missing as far as I am aware. In looking through the St Briavels reords in the database there are baptism, marriage and death entries for all the years in that period. Though, maybe the vicar spilled a glass of wine on one of the pages and made it unreadable.
If you are seking some of your ancestors that you belive would have been in the St Briavels records and you cannot find them, then have a read of other peoples remarks in this thread which will explain why.
If you tell us the names of the people you are seeking and give us as many details as you can about them, we maybe able to help.

Also, there's two bites of the cherry. Original parish records and Bishops Transcipts. Actually, the latter is often better, a more educated man than the parish clerk.

Don't confuse the Hundred of St Briavels with the (ecclesiastical) parish of St Briavels. The Hundred of St Briavels refers to that part of the Forest that was extra-parochial - and that was very extensive.

The Walker family were non conformists and attended a small congregational chapel on St Briavels Common which my wife sometimes attended when she was a girl, now age 77.
Some of these chapels were not to good at keeping records, but I do not know if they had a license for marriages.

There is also the possibility that your ancestors might have moved to the area during this time from somewhere else, it might not have been from far away but in a different parish close by. However the possibility of having moved into the area from a considerable distance should not be ruled out.

Last year I discovered that some of the Selby family from Hewelsfield had been baptised and buried at the Moravian Church at Brockweir. These records are in the process of being transcribed. It may well be worth a look when they appear although St Briavels is further away than Hewelsfield.

I also have members of my Leech Family who were Baptised at the Moravian Church, they lived Hewelsfield/St Briavels.
