William BRAIN abt 1806 children of second marriage (General)

by Jean Herbert @, Leeds Yorkshire, Wednesday, December 26, 2007, 08:45 (6179 days ago)

William Brain born abt 1806 married for the second time to Sussannah in Dec 1846. There were three children of this union - Mary born abt 1841 East Dean, Margaret born abt 1848 East Dean and Jesse (various spellings on census) born abt 1850.

Working on decendancy of children: Mary last found on 1851 census living at home with her parents in Edge Hills age 10. Not found on any further records.

Margaret Brain - Found on 1851 and 1861 cenus at home with her parents in Edge Hills. On 1871 census Margaret is shown living with her father William and her sister Beta, who was born of the first marriage of William to Sophia.

Margaret is shown with the surname of HANNEL and with her are her two children Elizabeth Hannel age 2 born abt 1869 Edge Hills and Catherine Hannel age 8 months born abt 1870 Edge Hills.

I checked the actual census for the correct surname spelling but cannot make it out and have not found a marriage for Margaret Brain married to a Hannel.

Jesse Brain born abt 1850 married Margaret Murrell and they had 11 children - names can be provided if anyone is interested.

I would be interested if anyone can shed some light on the marriage of Margaret and her sister Mary. Jean Herbert

Adendum

Recent communication from a Forest of Dean subscriber correctly transcribed the surname HANNEL as MURRELL. Margaret Murrell, the future wife of Jesse Brain, son of William, was at the same address as her future father-in-law, along with her two children. She and Jesse married in 1871. So, this eliminates this particular Margaret from my search but have still to find Williams two daughters Mary and Margaret.

I am wondering if you ever solved this riddle?

I have a theory but would love someone else to confirm this for me.

William Brain was married to a Susan/Susannah Harris (nee Hayward) - daughter of John Hayward. Prior to their marriage she was a widow - I believe she was previously married to James Harris and are shown on the 1841 census as living with their daughter Mary Ann. I am assuming Williams 'daughter' Mary was actually his step daughter and really named Mary Ann Harris. As for where she disappeared to ?

Excellent work!

That has given me some food for thought that will keep me awake tonight!

The only thing that confuses me is which William Brain (so James) did Mary Ann marry?
Life would be so much easier if everyone had new and origional names!

It can't be the 'father figure' she had after who her own fathers death as that does not tie up. It's good to see she found her way out of the workhouse unlike her step sister Beta, she sadly died there.

Thanks for your help

Whilst I cannot answer your query about Agnes Brain I can give a little extra info on the Buffin family and John Roberts who was with them in 1851.

John "Roberts" was born in 1832 to the unmarried Abia Roberts (bap 1813 dau of Moses Roberts and Mary). His father was John Reed who had died in Dec 1831.

Abiah Roberts married John Buffin 15 Mar 1835, Abenhall. In 1841 Census John "Roberts" is with his mother and step father and children from their marriage but is recorded as John BUFFIN.

Abiah died in 1841 so as you have noted in 1851 census John Roberts is with the Buffin familiy.

John Buffin marries again 11 June 1848, Spouse Eliza Roberts (dau of William Turner). I am yet to find the link if any between Eliza Roberts and Abia Roberts.

John Roberts (b1832) marries Mary Ann Hatton in Westbury 1863 and after her death marries Jane Roberts( again no link found yet) on 27 Nov 1870 in Cinderford. Jane Roberts was born 1838, the daughter of William Roberts and Ann. She is recorded as widow at time of her marriage to John Roberts but her 1st husband John Dobbins is alive and well and married to someone else.

Jane Roberts has a sister Labeata who married Benjamin Brain b1836, son of Cornelius Brain.

This might confuse things further but is a summary of what I have found so far.

I had not realised that John Roberts who married Jane Roberts and Mary Ann Roberts had been the illegitimate son of Abiah Roberts, daughter of Moses Roberts and Mary Hayward.

I too did not know the parents of Agnes Roberts.

As I have 361 Roberts in my family tree, it would be very useful if anyone knows the parents of Agnes's father Thomas Roberts. There are numerous baptisms to Thomas Roberts of an appropriate age.

In 1864 Mary married William Brain son of James and Agnes Brain .The last cencus I can find Edwin Harris on is in 1871 when he is 10 yr old after that I cannot seem to find him .I wondered if anyone has any clue to where he went .

Hi Paul,
I guess you have noticed just how very common this name is !. However wouldn't his given age be older than 9 if he was born in 1861 abd died in 1877, or are you wondering if FreeBMD has an error ?
I've tried Ancestry free search page and cannot see him on 1881 Census atho have only briefly searched - I wonder if need to search 1881 census further for him perhaps under surname Brain as well as Harris/Harries etc ??

Here is 1871 Census from LDS:

LATER UPDATE FOR MY EASE OF READING,

thanks to the newly-added prior post I see this 1881 Census for this houshold; so missing Joseph as well as Edwin.

1881
William Brain abt 1841 Flaxeley Parish Head Westbury On Severn - East Dean, Gloucestershire

A long shot, perhaps, but if we find Joseph Brain maybe we'll be led to Edwin ??.

I have the same 1871 Census detail.

Matilda Brain Dau age 2 born abt 1869 East Dean

William Brain's brother Joseph doesn't help with the search for Edwin :

Edwin not found on census for William's brothers Benjamin & Thomas either.

You're most welcome !
Apologies if you know this, but if you've not used it I can highly recommend the LDS aka Family Search website for general and potentially widespread searches. It's free, it's "worldwide" particularly North America so many of our migrating FoD ancestors, and despite being a bit "clunky" to get to work it's worth persevering with as is good at offering variations of name-spelling and dates etc - like many search sites it's wise to not be too restrictive when using the filters (eg look at the Wales results as well as England) as it's fairly quick n easy to browse thro suggested hits even if they run to a hundred or so. Yes it contains some errors but worth trying. For (hopefully) more guidance see

Hi Lottabottle,
apologies if you've already covered this elsewhere on the forum (I have done a quick search and cannot find anything).
Do you know what happens to Mary Ann and the rest of the family after the 1871 census ? - altho by 1881 it's likely Edwin may have left the household, it's possible he's near/with his relatives, perhaps ?.

-----

LATER UPDATE - Sorry, I hadnt realised the prior thread's been added to this one, and that the 1881 Census for our Brain/Harris household is in there, less Edwin sadly...

Also missing is Edwin's Uncle Joseph Brain b1854, maybe if we find him in 1891 etc then we'll find Edwin too, perhaps ??

I cannot give a full household, but think this MAY be our Joseph from LDS, right birthyear etc but a common name..

Mary Ann Harris was baptised 21 Mar 1841 Little Dean, daughter of James Harris 1818/1842 & Susannah Hayward. James Harris 1818 married Susannah Hayward 18 Feb 1839 Walford. He was buried 11 Feb 1842.
Susannah then married William Brain 1807 at Drybrook 3 Dec 1846.

Mary Ann Harris 1841 married William Brain 1838 in 1864 and as Slowhands has surmised he was the son of James Brain 1809 & Agnes Roberts 1811.

As per the family tradition, before marrying William Brain Mary Ann Harris had an illegitimate son Edwin in 1861 I do not know what happened to him, but whilst William Brain is related to me, Edwin Harris is not.

Before William Brain 1807 married Susannah Hayward, he had married Sophia Annis 1803 at Flaxley 10 Oct 1831, they had a child Beata 1934. Sophia was buried Little Dean 12 Mar 1843. Unfortunately she died in the Westbury Union Workhouse in 1894.
