Oliver LUFF Baptism in St Briavels help please (General)

Does anyone have access to the baptism registers for St Briavels for the early 1700s? I'm looking for the baptism of Oliver Luff, born ?? married Mary Edmonds (born 1718) in 1740 at Trellech, and died in Trellech in 1797. Information from another researcher has him as born in St Briavels, but no source quoted.

I've looked on the IGI, he isn't listed, and there are 3 candidates of suitable age for his parents.

This has been my brick wall for many years, I'm hoping someone can help.

hi jean, just saw your message, have spoken before about our Luff connections through th Monmouth family history group. Suzannah Luff married John Reynolds & thats where my husbands family comes in, do you remember. You're still looking for Oliver Luffs birth/baptism in St Briavels I see. I did look last time I went to Gloucester Records Office, but didnt find a baptism for Oliver ( you thought about 1770 ish didn't you) I did find a burial for an Oliver Luff in St Briavels tho, about that time, maybe 1772, will have to check my folder from the RO,(im on my daughters laptop at the moment, im stuck on the sofa with a bad back & will look when I move later & let you know). Why do you think he was born in St Briavels ? How old was he when he died in Trellech ? I will have another look next time im in Gloucester, incase I missed anything last time. I find the older records hard to read & understand, I havent had that much practice, they confuse me quite a lot!!!!! I had to ask a man working there what the Latin meant in the parish records & he told me it meant died!!!!

Good luck with your hunting!!!

Hi,
Looking through the list of St Briavels records awaiting transcription, the period you are interested in is available(now's your chance!)
Image St Briavels Baptism 1735-1776

I am at present in the midst of transcribing some of the later P.R's and there are some members of the LUFF family included in these.
Regards,
Malcolm

Thanks for your reply, Malcolm (and Jan and slowhands). As Oliver Luff married in 1740, then he was (probably) baptised before 1735. I say probably, because I do have one or two on my tree that got baptised just before marriage, as presumably the local minister refused to marry someone who'd never been christened.

Do you know if the earlier records (say, 1700-1735) are available? And what do you mean by "now's your chance"? If it means transcription, then I'll have some free time after March, but I'd love to see any images in the meantime.

And I await the results of your transcriptions with bated breath!

-Jean.
