George Jenkins birth -Breems Green, Newland (General)

by Diana, Tuesday, January 01, 2008, 20:12 (6173 days ago)

Dear list,

Please can anyone help me get back further with my Jenkins family of Breems Green, Newland. I have been looking for them for years now.

I have the will of Richard Jenkins 1843 which gives no clues to his origins. On the 1841 census of Church Sq, Tredegar it states that he is not born in county. I have the marriage entries and the baptismal entries of all of his children. I have the marriage entry of Richard Jenkins (signed) in 1800 at Bedwelty. I have researched many Jenkins families from all over Wales to try to find him.

I think that I may have finally found Richard Jenkins 1776- 1843 in Newland. He was baptised at Newland on 31st March 1776. All the names in the family are good for it to be the correct family. The father of Richard 1776 is George Jenkins which ties up with the name of the first born son of Richard Jenkins 1776 who was born 1801 and is buried in Bedwelty church in 1803 and is in the same grave as Richard 1776.

Now I have a problem as I cannot find a baptism for George Jenkins. He married Sarah Beach on 23rd February 1773 at Breems Green, Newland. He signed on the copy of the entry that I got from Glos. archives. Richard Jenkins 1776 is listed on most information I have on him as a 'gentleman' but he was definately an inn keeper as on his gravestone it states that he is 'of the Black Prince Inn' which is Tredegar, Mons. I think that he may have been tied up with mining as well.

There is a death of George Jenkins at Breems Green on the 24th Dec 1805 and that looks good - I have tried to find a will at Glos archives with no luck. I was recently told on this site that there was no MI for him in Newland.

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
thank you
Diana

George Jenkins birth -Breems Green, Newland

by Diana, Tuesday, January 01, 2008, 21:25 (6173 days ago) @ Diana

Dear Slowhands,

Perhaps I am just trying to over prove it! Unfortunately there is no age given on the death of George Jenkins in 1805. I have proved alot of my tree with wills. I could not find a will for Sarah Beach either(from previous posting). I think that this now must be the end of the line for the Jenkins family unless anyone else has any information.

I believe the Beach family were in trade - wool dealers - which also ties in with the Jenkins.

Thomas Jenkins the witness on the marriage of George J and Sarah Beach looks good as there is a brother called Thomas to Sarah bapt. 1748.

thank you again for your help in the past on this one and also for your help again now.

No harm in that ! the greater the weight of evidence and supporting docs or tales the better :-)

Notes for WILLIAM JENKINS:
He was a coal miner and coach builder in England. He left England for South Africa to accompany a tungsten drill to America for his brother Henry who was an engineer at the mines in PA and MD. He died of ruptured appendix. At that time, his obituary read "digestive ailment, he ate cucumbers and rhubarb pie". We can assume no one ate that combination in Frostburg for quite a while. He lost two fingers in a coal mining accident and was jokingly called "three finger Bill." . He was a member of the "Knights of Malta", one of the degrees of the York Rite (an appendant body of Freemasonry.) - Jenkins Family Bible

Frostburg MD newspaper obituary dated May 22, 1915:
The funeral of William Jenkins was held from the family home at 2 o'clock today. Rev. J. H. Bickford officiated. Burial was in Allegany cemetery. The Knights of Malta turned out in a body. One of Mr Jenkins' achievements in this section was the rock work he superintended for the Union Mining Co, at their fire clay mines in Mt Savage. He resided there a number of years and had full charge of that work.

Notes for HARRIET HOWARD MANNING:
Was hired out as a Lady's maid at 12 or 13 years old. Her church diary states they left Norton-by-Daventry for London on 7/20/1885, set sail from London 7/21/1885, landed in Baltimore, MD 8/5/1885. Her husband William had returned from Maryland and they re-crossed the Atlantic in a steam vessel with four children under five years old . According to research from England (Jerri Jenkins Jones) in the census of 1881 at the age of 24, she was living with George (uncle) aged 47, and Harriet Ann aged 45 his wife, born in Daventry. Also staying with them was niece Mary Ann Morgan and Jane Lolves, both born in Dunchurch, Warwickshire. It is worth noting it this point that Norton, Daventry and Wilnecote are on three main transport routes. the Main West Coast Railway line from Euston in London to Glasgow; the main Canal route from London to the north via the Midlands used for transport of coal; and the Old Roman Road, recently one of the most major routes to the north and west from London. Norton is some two miles from Daventry.

Children of WILLIAM JENKINS and HARRIET MANNING are:
5. FRANCIS WILLIAM JENKINS, b. 1881, England.; d. February 03, 1889.
5. ARTHUR JAMES JENKINS, b. August 12, 1882, Hockley, Tamworth, Warwickshire, England; d. October 31, 1949, Somerset Co, Greenville Twp, PA.

5. ALBERT JOHN JENKINS, b. 1897, Grahamtown, MD; d. November 23, 1969, Frostburg MD.
5. LAWRENCE GEORGE JENKINS was born May 25, 1900 in Grahamtown, MD, and died October 11, 1991 in Cumberland, MD. He married BLANCHE MARIE LARUE (Source: 1910 MD Census.) May 31, 1925, daughter of DENNIS LARUE and HANNAH MCKENZIE.
