George Jenkins/Sarah Beach (General)
Dear slowhands,
I have started a new topic because I seem to have lost the long reply I sent on the other thread of George Jenkins.
I have only this morning seen your posting about your Jenkins family. I have seen this story before on geocities and I tried to contact that person several times over the last year or so but the emails kept bouncing. Is that you?
I am 99% sure that this is the same family as mine and that I finally have the correct one. I have followed many Jenkins families over the past few years and the one in Newland is the only one that fits in. The dates and names are all good. I know that there are many Jenkins in Wales but there are not so many Richard Jenkins around 1776. I did follow one in Overton, north Wales which also has the same names and dates as the one in Bedwelty but the father of Isaac 1811 (my great x 2 grandfather) was John Jenkins. I wonder if the two families are connected. There are children of the correct age for this family and there is a Richard J who married Harriet Ravenscroft. Alot of the family in north wales are inn keepers and victuallers which is the same as my Jenkins family I know from the marriage certificate of Isaac Jenkins that his father was Richard Jenkins, gentleman. I was confused about this family for a long time.
I have a lot of documentary evidence on Richard J from 1800 when he was married at Bedwelty. I believe that he went from Newland to Tredegar before 1800 where he made a considerable fortune by the time of his death in 1843
My Jenkins family were closely tied up with the Marsden family. I have Rev. Benjamin Marsden son of Jonathon Marsden (born Leek) gentleman of Llanfair mines (I think silver mines) officiating at the marriage of Eliza Jenkins (d/o Richard 1776) and David Marsden (son of Jonathon M) his brother.
Richard Jenkins born 1808 Sirhowy son of Richard 1776 married Mary Anne Marsden born 1815 Llanfair (dau of Jonathon Marsden Llanfair mines). Richard 1808 was a wine and spirit merchant and High Constable of Wentlooge around 1869.
There is an Ann Jenkins marrying a Thomas Marsden in Bedwelty in 1805. Ann must have died by 1806 soon after the baptism of their daughter at Bedwelty on the 18th March 1806 because Thomas Marsden remarried in November 1806 to Mary Rees at Bedwelty in November 1806. I think that the family emigrated to America. Ann Jenkins may have been a sister to Richard 1776.
I have contacted you off list because I can copy and paste all the information I have on the Jenkins. It would take a long time to re-type it.
