Stephens family St Briavels c 1830 (General)
by deborahrmgreig, Sunday, January 06, 2008, 10:16 (6168 days ago)
My gg grandmother Esther Stephens was baptised in Llandogo at the same time as her sister Caroline in 1830. The family were from St Briavels, parents were Thomas and Anne Stephens and at that time he was a game keeper. I have been unable to find any of the family on the 1841 or 1851 census.
Esther married by Licence in Birmingham in 1856 (not sure why as her husband was from Shrewsbury!) her father Thomas appears to have still been alive then and was recorded as a farmer. The 1861 and 1871 census both have Anne Stephens (born c 1796) a widow with dtr Esther (born c 1827) living in Shrewsbury and show both mother and daughter were born in St Briavels.
I live in Gloucestershire myself and this is the only part of my family tree with local links. Can anyone suggest how I might find further information about Thomas and Anne Stephens or the early life of their daughter, my gg grandmother Esther?
Many thanks
Deborah

Is the link to St Briavels more "Hundred of" rather than "village of" ?

Thanks so much for your suggestion re Caroline, much appreciated. I'll have another look for marriage records for her in the Forest in particular and elsewhere between 1851 and 1861 as I haven't found her in 1861.
The answer to your question about 'hundred of' vs village of St Briavels is that I don't know... my sources of information on this are the census of 1861, 1871 and 1881 in which my gg grandmother describes her place of birth as 'Gloucestershire St Briavels' and the parish record at Llandogo (on this site) says Esther and Caroline Stephens, parents Thomas and Anne Stephens of St Briavels. Does this help?
Thanks

Just found Caroline's marriage by a bit of detective work.
Saw a marriage record in Westbury on Severn 1861 to a William Roberts so searched for this couple in 1871 and found that this was not my Caroline, but the Caroline born c 1837 in East Dean.
So followed a hunch and searched in Birmingham where her sister Esther, my gg grandma married in 1856 and found a marriage in Aston 1861 to an Edward Brinsford so searched for them in 1871 and found Esther Brinsford was born c 1831 in Gloucestershire St Briavels so I will send for this marriage certificate to see if it adds anything.
Meanwhile I will continue to search for further clues about parents Thomas and Anne Stephens.

Hi Deborah
The Caroline Stevens who married William Roberts was the daughter of Robert Stevens and Mary Ann Manning. Caroline and William had 9 children. Caroline was baptised 22.7.1838 Drybrook and died Newport 1900. The following is a good indication that you cannot trust census ages as you see Caroline aged only 4 years between 1851 & 1861 :
1851 Census
76
STEPHENS Robert Widow/er 46 Collier East Dean
Caroline 14 East Dean
1861 Census East Dean
Robert Stephens 56 Widower Coal Miner East Dean
Caroline dtr 18 Servant East Dean

Thanks very much
I am now certain having tracked them on several census returns that the Caroline Stephens to Edward Brinsford marriage in 1861 in Birmingham is the correct one as I have found Edward at the same address as Caroline's sister was married from and lodging with a John Gill who was a witness to Esther's marriage.
However, a further intrigue is that Caroline and Edward's son married Esther's daughter.... first cousins!!!
I have ordered Caroline Stephens marriage certificate to see if it gives me any more clues about her parents, my ggg grandparents.

Do you know whether Esther had any more brothers and sisters, because there is an Eliza Stephens married at St Briavels to Thomas Priddy in 1843. The Brides Father is recorded as being Thomas Stephens.
I grew up in the St Briavels area in the 1950s/60s and there were at least 2 stephens families who had lived there for generations.

Alison,
I have not been able to find any more siblings, but this does sound possible and I will see if I can find this Eliza on census to see if there are any links.
Thanks

Have just found this site and registered and seen your reference to a Caroline Stephens who married Williams Roberts. These are my paternal gt gt grandparents
I have their marriage cert 18 Dec 1861 married at Register Office, Westbury on Severn district. Both living at Stenders East Dean. William 22yrs a collier was his Father George Roberts. Caroline also 22yrs a spinster no occupation, but Father Robert Stephens as a Collier. Witnesses were a Nathaniel Smart and a Mary Robinson. No idea where they fit in but on FreeBMD I spotted a marriage for this couple,
My paternal Grandmother Mary Roberts is one of their many children and born in East Dean in Gloucester c1868/9 but I have been unable to find a baptism or establish a date of birth for Grandma Mary. I have requested several birth certificates but the staff at Gloucester Register Office have not found a Mary Roberts with parents William and Caroline Roberts nee Stephens and so I am stuck!
I traced Mary Roberts to Pontypridd where she married a James Williams and 3 sons were born from this marriage before James sadly died at a young age. Mary Roberts/Williams married my paternal Grandfather William George Tucker as a 29yr old widow in Pontypridd September 1899 and went on to have 5 sons and a daughter. I have Mary Tuckers death certificate she died in December 1912 but dispite living in the same area of Glamorgan for many years I have been unable to find the final resting place for my paternal Grandmother in any church burial grounds or municipal cemeteries. My Grandfather went on to remarry and he is buried with his second wife and a young 3yr old daughter from this 2nd marriage in St Cattwgs churchyard Gelligaer Glamorgan.
My Grandma Mary Roberts/Williams/Tucker is a mysterious lady, I have the "middle pieces" but NO birth or burial details......? I wondered if you could suggest what to do next please?
Regards
Glo

Thank you so much for you help with this.
Great minds obviously think alike as I had found these census and marriage records yesterday evening. Thanks for your efforts too ... much appreciated. Interestingly Esther Marion LLoyd who married Edward Brinsford (son of Caroline nee Stephens) was the daughter of Esther LLoyd nee Stephens so they were first cousins.

EDWARD BRINSFORD married SARAH LAWLEY in Neen Savage, Shropshire on 03 January 1827. She was registered as of the parish of Neen Savage whilst he was from Alveley parish. Their son Edward was born in Alveley in 1831. I am hoping that you may be able to tell me where Edward senior was born and who his parents were.

I am afraid I have not pursued the parents of my Edward Brinsford as he was related to me only by marriage (albeit related twice over as first cousins married each other.

I should add that my source for place of birth of Edward (1801) and his wife Sarah was only from 1851 census and it said Bridgnorth for both of them but I would think your parish records are more accurate (assuming we are talking about the same Edward and Sarah of course) The proof would be a baptism record for Edward 1831 with mother's maiden name, is this also in your church records by any chance I wonder?
If your contact wants to get in touch directly then my email address is my user name for this site followed by @btinternet.com I have a number of birth marriage and death certificates that may be of interest to them that I'd be happy to share. I'd be interested to hear from them too!
