Morgan /Howe Families (General)
by rheola, Tuesday, January 08, 2008, 09:56 (6166 days ago)
Hello ,
I'm trying to find any information about one of my sets of 3xgreatgrandparents .
Edward Morgan married Elizabeth Howe on January 20th 1828 at Newland.According to census information Edward was born at Garway Hereford.I found an Edward Morgan on the IGI ..... born 20/8/1805 to parents Thomas Morgan and Anne Prosser . I found Edwards' death on this website , he died at Monmouth Union Workhouse on July 29th 1876.This is all I've managed to find so far !
Elizabeth Howe is another matter, census information puts her birth as abt 1807 at Newland , she was buried on 15/6/1859 aged 53 yrs.this is all I've been able to find about her as yet .
There are an awful lot of Morgan's around the area and I've been trying to find out if Edward came from Hereford as a young man , or did he come as a child complete with the rest of the family....in which case , some of the Morgans' could be siblings !!
If anyone has these people in their tree , ANY snippet of information would be much appreciated
Thanks a lot
Regards rheola

Thomas Morgan, Ann Prosser family, Garway

I just started researching a completely different Prosser/Morgan family of Garway, but I also gathered a little info on Thomas and Ann/Anne's family, too, just in case. Most of this comes from the IGI, batch #C138871. This is quite large for a typical Morgan family, even of that time. I wonder if I've accidentally put together two families?
1. Thomas Morgan (b. calc. 1773; d. 20 Feb 1827 <Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
sp: Anne Prosser (b. calc. 1777; m. 29 Sep 1794, Garway, Herefordshire, England ;d. 29 Apr 1859-<Garway,Herefordshire,England>)
2. Thomas Morgan (c. 21 Dec 1795-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Charles Morgan (c. 9 Apr 1798-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. John Morgan (c. 7 Jul 1800-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Paul Morgan (c. 10 May 1803-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Edward Morgan (c. 20 Aug 1805-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Andrew Morgan (c. 27 Jun 1808-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Elizabeth Morgan (c. 26 Dec 1809-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Anne Morgan (c. 13 Nov 1811-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Sarah Morgan (c. 2 Oct 1814-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. George Prosser Morgan (c. 25 May 1817-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
2. Catharina Morgan (c. 5 Dec 1819-Garway,Herefordshire,England)
Might this be Ann Prosser Morgan in the 1841 Garway census?
Parish of Garway
Ann Morgan, 55, Herefordshire;
George do, 20, Herefordshire.
Enumerated nearby:

Mary Morgan, 50 , F.S.?, Herefordshire,

(They are in household of Edward Maddox, 67, Tailor, Herefordshire.)

I somehow accidentally posted that before I was quite ready!
The Herefordshire Family History Society has a Monumental Inscription Index at
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ukhfhs/miindex.html
From it, it appears that Ann & Thomas are buried at Garway, and of their children, Andrew, George Prosser, and possibly Elizabeth (her age is close, but unsure whether it is definitely her.) Ann and George's specific death dates came from familysearch. (Just the year was given at the Monumental Inscription Index.)
Later on, I'll go ahead and post a bit about my own Prosser-Morgan family of Garway in case they can provide you with any clues. Ann Prosser is probably too old to be the sister of Mary Prosser, but still might be some sort of relation?

Last little scrap of info. I forgot that I was going to put this in just before I accidentally posted the 1st message:
About James Rudge who John Morgan is living with in the 1841 census--I wonder if there is any tie to John Rudge Morgan who married Sarah Morgan, 24 Aug 1789 in Garway? I have no more info on any of these people.
By the way, do you know how old the Mary Morgan who married the Howe is? My Mary Prosser Morgan disappeared after the 1841 census. She doesn't seem to be buried in Garway, though she is shown at Little Garway Farm in the 1841 census. Mary was born 20 June 1790 at Garway to William Prosser and Elizabeth Meredith, who md. 4 Apr 1785 in Garway. So far, William is a dead-end Prosser.
You might be interested in the Prosser genealogy shared at the following site. It doesn't seem to connect to my line, but might contain some clues. It also contains (suprise) another Prosser-Morgan marriage!
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monfh/message/25221
In that message, "mike john" is probably right, at least concerning my James Cowles Morgan. James lived in Garway but he was born in Skenfrith, as was his father, it seems.

Is this Thomas, s/o Thomas Morgan & Ann Prosser?
by susanc123, Wednesday, October 01, 2008, 12:58 (5899 days ago) @ susanc123
Might this be Thomas, son of Thomas and Ann Morgan? Just throwing it out here as a possibility--no proof, although there is a [grand?]son named Paul in the household, not quite a typical given name in the Morgans. I think Paul might belong to Martha...so the origin might or might not be Prosser-related?)
Skenfrith Parish
Tregout? p. 16a
Thomas Morgan 55, Ag lab, Monmouthshire;
Ann Morgan, 60, Monmouthshire;
Martha Morgan, 25, Monmouthshire;
Paul Morgan, 8, Monmouthshire (probably too young to belong to Ann);
James Morgan, 4, Monmouthshire
There are Merediths enumerated on this page and on the next.
There are at least a couple of Thomas Morgans born in 1773-ish in the area (age of the elder Thomas). One baptism I've unfortunately lost the source for is
21 Nov 1773 Thomas s/o James & Mary Morgan, Grosmont, Monmouthshire.
According to a post I've read about Garway, people with Grosmont and Skenfrith origins were common there, but this baptism is still speculation.
Susan
P. S. I think I might have identified James Morgan, 90, Monmouthshire in the 1841 Skenfrith census (p. 5a) as possibly the father of James Coles/Cowles Morgan. Enumerated on the next page of the census is J. A. Morgan, 52, Monmouthshire (p. 5b). J. A.'s children and wife have the same names as the ones for Joseph Austin Morgan, who is the older brother of James Cowles Morgan. Page 6 has a John Morgan, who might also be the son of James Morgan, 90....
Is this Thomas, s/o Thomas Morgan & Ann Prosser?

These names came from location extractions in the IGI [Batch #P017431], but the relationships haven't been verified yet in any other way. At first glance they seem to potentially fit together, at least going by parent names [given in baptisms], location [of baptisms]and time period involved. Admittedly, this is just a theory about the parents and siblings of Thomas Morgan who md. Ann Prosser--but who knows, maybe your ancestors have some Morgan cousins/uncles living nearby?:
1. James Morgan
sp: Mary Watkeys (14 Feb.1768 [Banns], Grosmont, Monmouth, England)
2. Thomas Morgan (c.21 Nov 1773-Grosmont,Monmouth,England;d.20 Feb 1827)
sp: Anne Prosser (b.calc. 1777;m.29 Sep 1794;d.29 Apr 1859- <Garway,Herefordshire,England>)
2. Mary Morgan (c.18 Jul 1779-Grosmont,Monmouth,England)
2. Richard Morgan (c.6 Jun 1784-Grosmont,Monmouth,England)
2. John Morgan (c.7 Jul 1776-Grosmont,Monmouth,England)
2. Sarah Morgan (c.1788-Grosmont,Monmouth,England)
2. Charles Morgan (c.27 Nov 1791-Grosmont,Monmouth,England)

Hi susanc123,
I've been out of action for a while so I've only just checked this message on the forum, it's been quite a while since I posted it ,so I didn't think there would be new messages !
There is so much information here and I can't thank you enough . I wasn't surprised really to find Edward had a brother Charles , there was a Charles Morgan as a witness at Edward and Elizabeth's marriage.I'll print out the info so that I can work out where everyone fits in . I'll have a look at the links as well, I think I'm going to be busy for a while.
You mention the place Grosmont for the Morgan family, on the map it doesn't seem far from Garway, so it seems feasible .
Thanks again ,any information is always much appreciated

Is this Thomas, s/o Thomas Morgan & Ann Prosser?
by susanc, Thursday, April 28, 2016, 22:09 (3133 days ago) @ susanc123
Page 6 has a John Morgan, who might also be the son of James Morgan, 90....
I have seen 3 wills that mention Joseph Austin Morgan (actually, one is his own will) and James Coles Morgan (or James' son, Walter Prosser Morgan after James had passed). Although John Morgan was alive at the time all 3 wills were written, none of them mention him. Is this normal practice if John had truly been their brother? I don't know hereditary practices, so to me it seems odd that he is completely omitted from all 3 of these wills unless he isn't their brother after all.
James Cowles/Coles MORGAN & Mary PROSSER

I'm having a bad day--this message somehow completely vanished when I hit "preview"! Then when I recreated it, it totally evaporated when I hit “ok-submit”. I can't find it in the forums anywhere so I'm posting it yet again. I’m sorry if it turns up multiple times!
I forgot that Mary PROSSER didn't marry John Cowles/Coles MORGAN until 1816, so she wasn't a MORGAN until 1816 and therefore she didn't marry your HOWE in 1808. I should have realized that much, much sooner! More proof of a bad day...
I think my Margaret MORGAN ties into the following PROSSER-MORGAN family of Garway, but I won't list all my reasons right now. Margaret's parents on her Skenfrith bap. record are James and Mary MORGAN. Could this be the right couple?
1. James Cowles/Coles MORGAN (c. 23 Oct 1791-<Skenfrith, Monmouth, Wales>; d. Apr 1827-<Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
sp: Mary PROSSER (c. 20 Jun 1790-Garway, Herefordshire, England; m. 25 Mar 1816-Garway, Herefordshire, England)
2. Margaret Morgan (b. 20 Apr 1816-Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, Wales; d. 11 Dec 1867-San Francisco, San Francisco, CA)
sp: Theodore Curtis (m.17 Jan 1846-Nauvoo, Hancock, IL)
3. Theodore Walter Curtis (b. 29 Jan 1848-St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; d. 1 May 1930-Boston, Suffolk, MA)
3. Margaret Curtis (b. 17 Dec 1849-St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; d.13 Mar 1926-Brooklyn, Kings, NY)
2. Walter Prosser Morgan (c.13 May 1818-Garway, Herefordshire, England; d.1898-<Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
sp: Elizabeth Hulin (b. abt. 1829-Awre, Gloucestershire, England; m. 19 Apr 1860-Blakeney, Gloucestershire, England; d.1907-<Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
3. Walter Morgan (c. 25 Nov 1862-Garway, Herefordshire, England; d. April 8th 1919-<Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
3. Mary Morgan (c. 1 Dec 1863-Garway, Herefordshire, England; d.1900-<Garway, Herefordshire, England>)
sp: John Baker
3. Catherine Morgan (c. 29 Mar 1865-Garway, Herefordshire, England)
3. Anne Morgan (c. 10 Mar 1867-Garway, Herefordshire, England)
3. Elizabeth Morgan (c. 25 Apr 1869-Garway, Herefordshire, England)
3. Margaret Morgan (c. 6 Dec 1869-Garway, Herefordshire, England)
2. James George Morgan (b. 22 Jul 1820-Garway, Herefordshire, England; d.15 Nov 1844-Nauvoo, Hancock, IL)
sp: Emily
2. Anne Morgan (c. 5 Dec 1822-Garway, Herefordshire, England; d. 10 Sep 1842-Nauvoo, Hancock, IL) I'm not sure this is the exact same Ann Morgan who died in Nauvoo, but their ages are extremely close and both girls were born in England.
My theory is that James Cowles MORGAN, c. 23 Oct 1791, Skenfrith, son of James Morgan, is the son of James MORGAN and Margaret AUSTIN. James' and Margaret's Skenfrith marriage license dated June 24 1787, shows that James MORGAN was of Garway, Hef. & Margaret AUSTIN was of Skenfrith.
Here's confirming lineage info from Bradney, Joseph Alfred, Sir: "A history of Monmouthshire from the coming of the Normans into Wales down to the present time, Vol. 1, Part 1, p. 81"
Vol. 1, Part 1
To access p. 81, click on Grosmont in the column to the left of the main screen.
My next theory is that the elder James MORGAN might possibly be alive in Skenfrith in 1841 for the census. I have a journal entry from James Palmer that I believe refers to my Margaret Morgan. She seems to be the Margaret Morgan enumerated in the 1841 Pitthouse Dymock, Hef census with the Joseph Hill family. James Palmer was born in Dymock, Hef. He and Margaret attended the same church, and both later moved to Nauvoo, IL. (James George MORGAN also worked in Dymock and later moved to Nauvoo, IL.)
Wed. 9 Dec 1840 - "Next day I visited Monmouth and Skenfrith where the grandsires of the Morgan family resided. In company with Miss Margaret Morgan was kindly received and treated with respect." (Journal of James Palmer)
So, since Margaret's "grandsires" were alive in Dec of 1840, is it possible that they were alive for the census in 1841? This would be extraordinary since many Morgans seem to die young. Margaret died age 51 of angina pectoralis. Of course, James Palmer might be referring to Austins, Prossers, or Merediths instead?
I'm not sure if your Garway PROSSER-MORGANs tie to these Garway PROSSER-MORGANS, but just in case, I thought I'd share this slightly-disjointed info with you!
Transcribed Skenfrith registers are online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/skenfrithprt.htm
Unfortunately, there seems to be an unusually large amount of Thos. Morgans in them.
This is such a great site! I just found Walter Prosser Morgan’s marriage to Elizabeth Hulin here. It lists James Morgan’s middle name as Coles.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=page&id=2
James’ middle name is also listed as Coles in the Skenfrith transcription below (#217):
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/skenfrith/baps/skenbap033...
On the following Monumental Inscriptions at Garway, and on the baptism register, his middle name is listed as Cowles (#553)…I don’t quite know what to make of these differences…

Morgan /Howe Families
by susanc, Monday, August 05, 2019, 04:04 (1940 days ago) @ rheola
I'm sorry, it looks like I accidentally combined two different Edward MORGAN's in my earlier responses to this post. Amazingly, both Edward's married Elizabeth's and both apparently lived in Monmouth at one time or another. One Edward was the son of Thomas MORGAN and Anne PROSSER of Garway in Herefordshire, the other one married Elizabeth HOWE in Newland, Gloucestershire.
Records for Edward who married Elizabeth HOW were recorded mostly in the Newland/Coleford area. He has various birthplaces given for him. His marriage record shows his birthplace as Monmouth, the 1841 census shows him (surname mistakenly transcribed as Mongar) born in a foreign part, not Gloucestershire, the 1851 census shows his birthplace as Newland, Gloucestershire, the 1861 census as Garway, Herefordshire, and the 1871 census as Grosmont, Monmouthshire.
The other Edward, the son of Thomas Morgan and Anne Prosser, was born in Garway. He carried on in the family occupation of a tailor in Monmouth. He and some siblings then moved to Newport, Monmouthshire, where they continued as tailors. Newspaper funeral announcements help verify the census information naming members of his extended family.
I wouldn't be surprised if the two Edwards were related somehow since they seem to be tied to some of the same general locations. If so, I don't know how they are. I wanted to own up to my mistake in combining them so no one else wastes time traveling down the same wrong path.
