George Cox, Clearwell (General)
by jcholak, Friday, January 11, 2008, 19:04 (6163 days ago)
I've had no success finding information on George Cox, named as the father on Baptismal Registers of the following children:
Emma Cox, b. 1842 in West Dean
Thomas, b. 1843 in Tutshill, Tidenham, Monmouthshire
Sarah, b. 1845 in Clearwell
Hannah, b. 1849
Mary Ann, b. 1850
Edwin, b. 1855, d. February 28, 1867
Elizabeth, b. 1857
Fanny, b. 1859
Hannah, Mary Ann, Edwin, Elizabeth and Fanny were all born in Newland Bush.
The mother of these children is Ann Matilda Brooks, b. 1821 in West Dean, d. February 14,1886 in Clearwell, daughter of James and Mary Brooks. I am unable to find a marriage record for George and Ann Matilda, thereby failing to find parents for George Cox, nor a birth or death record for him.
I would appreciate any information on him.
Thank you.

getting the feeling that George may have been a traveller/boatman on the River Wye judging by his absence or reluctance to show on Census data !

Which prompts the question: Was he transported?
Looking at http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/convicts/index.html
I find a George Cox was found guilty of Sheep Stealing at Gloucester in 1859 (same year as last child was born), sentenced to 6 years penal servitude and was transported on the Norwood in 1862. But his age is given as 25 which does not fit.

logical progression
there was a George COX from Cheltenham area who seems to appear in Gloucester Goal about the same time frame - 1861 , perhaps this is him, the Physical description suggests this convict as unmarried with no children.

Mike and Slowhands,
Once again I thank both you gentlemen for coming to my rescue! I also believed that George Cox either "labored" in the military or at sea, thereby explaining why he did not appear on any census, or was confined somewhere. I could not get it to tie in anywhere, though, as I did not know how to access any goal records, nor have any time frame to look at since he had to be around when all these children were born!
Do either of you have a preference as to which George Cox is the most likely candidate in the goal records? Also, any suggestions as to how I can obtain proof of his identity in these records?
As for Ann Matilda, WOW! You two are brilliant. I did not suspect for a minute that she was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Jones who eventually married James Brooks. The kicker here is that I actually transcribed my 3x great-grandmother's baptism in the Bream baptismal register without being aware of doing so! I remember regarding the name as interesting since I had "Ann Matilda" in my family tree, but never made the connection.
Slowhands, you have come through so many times with vital info on my Cox/Tingle branch. And, Mike, I'm certain you were my Leadbeater source a few years back! Interesting, too, that the "Lodger" at my great-grandparents, Catherine and Edwin Cox, in Glamorgan, Wales was a "Gwilliam". The only Gwilliam in my FTM is "Eliza Gwilliam" who married George Leadbeater in 1868.
I now have several avenues to explore and will send for the marriage certs for George and Ann and also Mary Jones and James Brooks.
Thanks again, guys!
Jean

I'm confident ( as I can be !) the Goal records around 1841 are your George, and teh later ones are the younger Cheltenham George. I suspect the Cheltenham George is the one transported to Austrailia; however your George may have been transported on another ship , perhaps those records have yet to surface :-)_

George COX, - Goal records or Workhouse?
by jcholak, Saturday, January 26, 2008, 17:38 (6148 days ago) @ slowhands
Could this be my George Cox as an Inmate at the Union Workhouse in the 1901 England Census? The age and DOB year are exactly right for him.
1901 England Census 1901 England Census
Name: George Cox
Age: 79
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822
Relation: Inmate
Gender: Male
Where born: Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England
Civil Parish: Tetbury
Ecclesiastical parish: Tetbury St Mary
Town: Tetbury
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England
Street address: Number 70 Union Street
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage: Widr
Education:
Employment status: Inmate
Registration district: Tetbury
Sub-registration district: Tetbury
ED, institution, or vessel: 5
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 70
This was the Union Workhouse, 70 Union Street, Tetbury. Is anyone familiar with it or can tell me something about it? I don't really know what is meant by "workhouse". Is there any way to obtain more information about the inmates who were kept there?
Would George have been kept at a workhouse rather than be sent to Australia for stealing sheep??? His condition as to marriage (I am assuming) means he was a "Widower". This would also be correct as Ann Matilda Cox died in 1886.
I would appreciate and value any opinions and/or information. Thank you.

This George Cox family was eliminated earlier since George's son, Thomas, (my 2x gr. grandfather) shows baptismal register listing Ann Matilda as mother and George as father.
Do you think the workhouse George Cox is not Thomas' father and Ann Matilda's husband, but is actually the George from Avening with spouse Sarah?
Thank you.

George COX, - Goal records or Workhouse?
by JRCoxUSA, Friday, October 09, 2009, 00:33 (5527 days ago) @ jcholak
There is a George Cox whose death was recorded at the Dursley Workhouse on February 13, 1892 at the age of 78 (Register Reference: G/DU69, Page No. 17). He died at the Cam workhouse and was buried there. This same George is listed in the 1881 Census as living at the Cam Workhouse as a farm laborer (http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Dursley/Dursley.shtml). With him is Harriet Cox aged 32. The census says they were both born at Cam but from looking at the birthplaces for some of the other inmates they might have simply listed which workhouses they were living in at the time. It seems this might be the George Cox married to Ann Matilda Jones (Brooks) and their daughter Harriet.
