Duplicate baptism records (General)

by priest @, Thursday, January 17, 2008, 04:14 (6159 days ago)

Can anyone explain why some people seem to have two baptism records? For example
Jane Preest 5th August, 1769 has two baptism records one for Bream and one under Newland with different register references but clearly the same person.
This has happened for a number of people mainly with the Bream and Newland duplication, am I missing something simple and which one do you use for tree?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Bream and Newland

Bream is/was a chapelry in the parish of Newland; so my understanding is the Baptism was recorded in Bream and then maybe some one has updated the records in Newland :-)

Duplicate baptism records

Another explanation for the duplicate records may be that the Bream registers were occasionally taken to Newland. I found the following three such references as I transcribed the Bream baptisms:

Dec 1813 "Registers taken to Newland"
After an Apr 1822 baptism, there was not another Bream baptism until Nov 1825 with the explanation given as, "The Church was slated for repairs, and not re-opened late 1825 - during which period the Registers will probably be found at Parkend or Newland."
Oct 1828 "The Registers taken to Newland"
