Albert Walford, Lydbrook (General)

by Carol Walsh @, New Zealand, Wednesday, July 20, 2005, 21:53 (7065 days ago)

My great-grandfather was Albert Walford, and he was born in Lydbrook, approx. 1844. Unfortunately, his birth does not appear to have been registered, and we have no more personal information other than his father's name was Thomas Walford.
Albert married Ellen Blake in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, in 1866 and they emigrated to New Zealand in 1875 with their five children.
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind regards
Carol

Albert Walford, Lydbrook

by Carol Walsh @, New Zealand, Thursday, July 21, 2005, 04:19 (7065 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.
The 1871 census information is exactly the correct family, although we have Rosannah Blaker as Rosannah Blake. The elder Ellen Walford named in the census was Ellen Blake(r) and daughter of Rosannah. Albert and Ellen Walford came to New Zealand with their five children in 1875. Three of the children are named in the census - Harriet, Ellen and Emma. Rosannah and Samuel were not yet born. Rosannah was born in 1873 and Samuel in 1875. Samuel was my grandfather.
If there is any further information you know of, I would be even more grateful than I am already.
Thank you once again
Carol

Dear Slowhands
Thank you very much once again. This is great. Can you tell me please, exactly which census areas these come from, and do you possibly have any census material containing Thomas Walford, born approx 1820 - give or take a few years?
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Kind regards
Carol

another Walford - but Albert does not fit !

by Carol Walsh @, New Zealand, Friday, July 22, 2005, 04:46 (7063 days ago) @ slowhands

No he doesn't.
Albert was married in Ross-on-Wye in Feb 1866, so the c1844 birthdate is much more likely. According to his death certificate, his father was Thomas, and his mother Martha, but I haven't been able to pick up a likely marriage match
after 1837. I have no idea, either about Albert's siblings, which was why I was hoping for a census with Thomas as the head of house. Given that all the data I have seems to include Lydbrook,Walford, Ross-on-Wye and other places roughly in the same area, I can't imagine that they went very far until Albert decided to emigrate to New Zealand.
Thank you for all your help to date.
Kind regards
Carol

Once again - thank you
Yes I have seen the BMD entries. The Albert Walford marriage of 1866 - Ross-on-Wye is the correct one.
But Thomas has me stumped. According to Albert's death certificate, his father was Thomas and his mother Martha. I can't find a match anywhere. The Thomas Walford marriage of 1842 ddoesn't have a match with a Martha.
A Thomas Walford did marry a Martha in (I think) 1858, so it is possible that he was married twice, and the Martha listed on Albert's death certificate as his mother was actually his step-mother. It is all just guesswork really.
However, if I am really lucky someone else may see this and have the answers I am seeking.
Your help has been great in reinforcing some of my theories and making them fact.
Thanks again
Carol

Hi Andrew
Thank you for your reply. My great-grandfather Albert was born (as far as we know) in Lydbrook, Gloucestershire about 1844, so on the fact of it, it doesn't look as though there is a connection, but the dates would tie in and a couple of the names have repeated themselves in later generations, e.g. Harriet and Selma/Selena. My grandfather who was born in Gloucestershire (registration is Newnham) in 1875 was Samuel. However, all this could be coincidence, but I welcome anything at all that may help.
Thanks again
Cheers

Hi Mike
Thank you for your reply. The family I am trying to locate is surname WALFORD. In particular Albert Walford, born Lydbrook c1844, son of Thomas Walford and possibly Martha. The birth doesn't seem to have been registered as I have been unable to find it within civil registration. The only other thing I can think of is that he had another given name, but used Albert. Albert came to New Zealand in 1875 with his wife and five children, the youngest of whom was my grandfather, Samuel Walford. Samuel had three daughters, so with the death of my mother, his youngest daughter, that particular line has died out here in New Zealand. I do not know if Albert Walford had any brothers or sisters, as none came to New Zealand with his family as far as I know.
Anything else you can dig up will be most welcome.
Thanks again
Carol

I have a suspicion that Martha WILLIAMS is in fact Martha WALFORD.
1841, 1861 and 1871 Census entries for Martha and family may help as may this death registration:

Deaths Mar 1878
WALFORD Martha 67 Westbury S. 6a 168

This is the entry from the Burial Register:
Martha WALFORD

Entry Number: 564
Year: 1878
Month: Feb
Day: 13
Surname: WALFORD
Forenames: Martha
Place of Residence: The Lime Kilns, Lydbrook
Age at Death: 67 years

Hello Carol,

I believe Michael Gwilliam may be right in that Martha Williams and Martha Walford are the same person.

In my records I have the following:-

1871 Census Lydbrook Hill

Martha Walford 59 widow Home Duties born Kidderminster
Frederick Walford 23 son Coal Worker born Lydbrook

If you look at the 1851 census that Mike supplied including Albert Williams and replace the surname Williams with Walford then you surely have the same family.

As I mentioned in my earlier message Richard Walford and Mary Coley had a daughter Martha c 1812. They also had a son William Walford 1814(my greatx3 grandfather) when William married his second wife in 1867 at Lydbrook a witness was Martha Walford.
When Mary Walford 1819 the daughter of Richard Walford married at Ruardean in 1852 a witness was Martha Walford. This suggests that Martha 1812 also moved to Lydbrook.
Another son of Richard and Mary also moved to Lydbrook his name was Thomas Walford who was a tailor as was his father Richard Walford. Thomas was married to Charlotte on the 1841 census and Elizabeth 1851, 1861. There's no sign of him marrying a Martha.
Mike Gwilliam mentioned a Martha Walford died in 1878 at Lydbrook, she would be the correct age to be Martha c1812 .
Is it not possible that Martha Walford 1812 married a Thomas Williams and reverted to Walford for whatever reason after being a widow, her children also changing surnames to their mother's name of Walford.

Hi Julie
Thank you for your reply to my message. Do you happen to have access to an 1851 census? Our Albert was born early in the 1840's so presumably after the 1841 census was taken, and when I find a cesnsus report with "Albert Walford" on it, I will be a very happy person indeed.
Thank you once again.
