Philip Baldwin - Dead End (General)
by zuzijo, Sunday, January 27, 2008, 12:48 (6152 days ago)
So after a flying start on my grandfathers family; I'm on my second brick wall on my Grandmothers.
Philip Baldwin ..... born about 1855 died 1877
Have found a record of his mother and brother in the 1861 Census:
Mary Baldwin age 39, so born about 1822
Hurbert Baldwin age 11, born about 1850
They are lodging with a William Griffiths (widow), although the census states she's married.
I think I've found a record of her burial in the Parish records at Bream; but haven't been able to find Hurbert or Philip in the baptiam records currently online.
Also, can anyone point me in the right direction for newspaper clippings photo's etc?? I've found one called Sun Green, where i found an old newspaper article about my Granfy but would like to find more if poss. Have already put the call out to Aunties and Uncles to dig out those old photos and will submit any onceI have them scanned.
Thanks for all your help!!

Slowhands .... you are amazing; and will definately look at these. Although if George Baldwin died in 1852 then he's not Philips father!! Mmmm ... think I may have to fork out for a copy birth certificate!!
Someone mentioned St. Catherines House in another post .... is this a suitable resource for family tree research, or are there better ones out there.
Am an absolute newbie to this, but after spending an entire weekend hunched over my computer am completely hooked .... and also very proud that my family have furresters for possibly over a 1000 years!!

there are too many loose ends here - Mary would find it difficult to be in two places at once on 1861 census ( but not impossible people have been recorded at home and lodging before !) but following William Griffiths seems to help

comes back to Hannah PREEST nee CULLIS....

it needs a little more work to tie off
I would use the "official" Govt route to order your certs
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
there are others who offer to order on your behalf , lets just say they are a commercial enterpise :-)

How bizarre .... I've been corresponding with Alison ( Looking for another branch of the Preest .... and yes related ....) and William Griffiths has collected another family waif!! ;-) who is related to Alison, after taking in my possible g-g-g-granny .... small world!

Sue,
A lot of this is above me but if it helps Hannah Preest nee Cullis is not the wife of my William Preest born 1808. His first wife was Betsy Phillips and second Mary Harris. Hannah Cullis has confused us before, see page 11 of the formum in entry re Eveline Evangelina Priest.
Hope this helps. Having great difficultly getting to grips with this new forum and if this (second message) doesn't appear will e mail you!

Hi Alison
I have actually taken the plunge and ordered my first birth certificate, this being for Philip. I figure this will definately confirm the name of his Mother and her marital status when he was born. This is all very new to me, but I'm having a lot of fun!!
