Almhouses Newland (General)
The Newland Almshouses are sited one side of Newland Church (they are white painted brick cottages). The side facing the church & where the Ostrich Pub is on the corner - marks the old burial path to Coleford.
The plaque on the Almshouses reads:
'These Almshouses for eight Men and eight Women Parishioners of Newland and the Habitiation adjoining for a Lecturer were founded A.D. 1615 by Mr William Jones. Citizen and Haberdasher of London: and he appointed the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers Governors.'
Underneath another small plaque reads:
'The Almshouses were modernized in 1954 by The Haberdasher's Company Governors of the Charity of William Jones'
They are also referred to as 'Jones Almshouses' on certificates & census returns.
