WHITSON and REED families, posssibly Ruardean (General)
by janger , Friday, February 01, 2008, 04:16 (6146 days ago)
I am looking for the parents of Barbara Whitson, she was born in 1875 and died in 1944.
She married George John Bennett of Ruardean Gloucestershire.
Also the parents of Elizabeth Tingle Reed. Elizabeth was born in 1850 and died in 1921. She married James Bennett. All from the same area. Possibly Ruardean area

Thanks for the reply. Not too sure about this one, she would have been 7 years of age. Have you any other details. I know her father to be James Whitson.

Matthew WITSON marriage 1845 !!!
by jimashton , Friday, June 06, 2008, 06:36 (6020 days ago) @ slowhands
Catching up with entries made whilst I was away. I see I had got involved with this string earlier. I had Matthew Whitson & Hannah in my tree as they are the parents of James Whitson who married Tabitha Herbert who is related to me. I hadn't realised that Hannah was in fact Hannah Penn - also in my tree, she is the daughter of John Penn and Susannah Goode. John & Hannah had 14 children and one of them Elizabeth 1819 married William Harper having 2 children, including Jane 1850 who married Henry Read 27.6.1874 St Johns West Dean. Henry was the son of Richard Read & Fanny Duberley.

Hi Janger & Slowhands,
Slowhands almost got it right, but Richard Read (there are so many derivations of this name, but I always use Read) who married Sarah Tingle were not the parents of George Read, but they were related :
The parents of George Read 1828 who married Jane Tingle were George Read 1785/1851 & Ann Brown 1790/1869. The parents of George Read 1785 were Richard Read 1743 & Margaret. The parents of Richard Read 1743 were Francis Read abt 1700 & Margaret (first of their 11 children born 1722) 5th child Francis Read born 1730 married Jane Stephens and they had 9 children including Richard Read baptised 10.12.1775 who married Sarah Tingle 9.5.1806.
I have the parents of Jane Tingle as William Tingle & Elizabeth.
As slowhands may remember my main interest is the Marfell family and always follow siblings & parents of spouses - often too far for my own good - in this case George Read 1828 had a brother Richard Read 1814 who married Fanny Duberley 1811/1902, they had 9 children and I have connections from most, but primarily through their first son William Read 1839 who married Selina Marfell.
I am intrigued by your initial posting. I have a James Bennett born 1752 Ruardean who married "an" Elizabeth, they had a daughter Benedicta 1780 who married John Yemm, is there a connection here.

I have a James Bennett born 1741 with parents George and Margaret in my family tree.
Another James Bennett born 1769 parents Thomas and Lucy (nee Hale)
James born 1810 and James born 1842. I do not think there is a connection between us.

Hi Jangler
When you have a Family Tree approaching 17,000 people, you are connected to most people in the Forest of Dean !!
The James Bennett 1769 baptised 13.8.1769 to parents Thomas Bennett 1728/1796 & Lucy Hale 1732/1812 are in my Family Tree, but "connected" not "related". James Bennett 1769 was one of the 12 children of Thomas Bennett & Lucy Hale, with Lucy being his second wife. Their daughter Mary married Thomas Meek 1758, one of my 6 times great uncles. Two of Thomas Meek & Mary Bennett's children are connected to another posting; their son Thomas married Rebecca Vaughan and one their son's was Richard Vaughan Meek - see Jessica Meek archive posting, Thomas Meek & Mary Bennett's son Moses 1779 married Anne Brain, great grandfather of Jane Meek, see my "Jane Meek born 1860" posting.
Going back to James Meek 1769 he also had a sister Jane Bennett 1773 who married John Duberley, they were the parents of Fanny Duberley who married Richard Read as per my previous response to this posting.
The James Bennett 1741 you mention was the brother of Thomas Bennett 1728, father of James Bennett 1769. George Bennett 1693 & Margaret Craddock had 11 children the first was Thomas 1722, the last but one was James 1741.
Perhaps you can help me. I have no further information for James beyond his baptism 13.8.1769.
Perhaps slowhands can help me also. I also cannot follow Barbara Whitson. Is she the Barbara in the workhouse in 1881 and if so why, as her mother Tabitha (in my Family Tree obviously !!)and her sister Alice are with Tabitha's parents George Herbert & Sophia Grindle.
Did she go on to marry George John Bennett and if so, do we know who his parents were.

Thanks for the information you are correct in saying their is a link between us. George John Bennett was my grandfather and he did marry Barbara Whitson my grandmother. Both grandparents died before I was born.
Like you I would like to know why Barbara (if it is the correct one) was in the workhouse alone.

On my family tree I have the first son of George and Margaret to be George born 1722 (you have Thomas) and I have only ten children. ending with James born 1741. Like you I have no further information concerning James 1741. Thomas and Lucy I have only 9 children, and did not realise it was his second marriage.

Hi Jangler
I have to apologise to you, I had not "sorted" the children of George Bennett & Margaret Craddock. Within my family tree software, you can add new children as discovered, but physically have to click on "Sort" to put them in the right order - I had not done this. George Bennett baptised 2.3.1721 is the first child, Thomas is the 4th. They had 2 Joseph's 1737 & 1743.
There is too much detail to add here, so I will email you via the forum, to get your address, then I can pass on the information.
