ORMONDS in the Forest of Dean (General)

by mjluscombe, Friday, February 01, 2008, 08:18 (6146 days ago)

Has anyone any information on any Ormonds in the Forest of Dean? As yet there is only one mentioned and that is Frances Ormond buried in 1879. I am searching for a Frank Ormond said to have been born in 1871 in the Forest of Dean area. The earliest reference I have of him is in the 1901 Census of London where he was said to be born in Chelsham(?Cheltenham)If anyone wants any more info on him you are welcome to see the family website(see link below)

You say on your website that you don't know who Franks parents were, I'm assuming you've already sent for his marriage certificate to Ethel?

ORMONDS in the Forest of Dean

Thanks all of you who have replied. All thoughts are very welcome. My mother is 87 and her brother 90. Both would love to know about their father who left his second family destitute in 1928 and who died in 1945.
I sent for both the wedding certs(Ethel Catherall and Margaret Jane Day.) The first one says his Father was Frank Sinclair Ormond a Barrister!! I don't think he would have falsified his name on his first marriage.
On the second marriage(no divorce) he said his father was Frank Gay Ormond an Electrician. The witnesses for both marriages were all relatives of the bride.
I have many birth certs for "possibles" on Frank and possible parent marriages. A Frank Maurice Ormond was born in 1873 and died aged 13 in London. So definitely not him.
I have my thoughts on Frank's parents. A Francis Ormond(Gent - was born in Scotland in 1818 - possible link with Sinclair - and married his second wife in 1885 in London). He was a philanthropist who travelled around England and other parts of the world. He was said to have no children or did he?. A Francis Ormond was married to Frances(died in Swansea district and buried in Lydney 1879) His daughter Caroline(Slowhands mentions her) was in Cheltenham at the time of Frank's birth. She wasn't married but did so in 1879 (when Frank said his parents died and he was "fostered by the "Gay" family) Was he an illegitimate son of Caroline? I have contacted the family in New Zealand but they don't seem to know anything. My mother says he was "well brought up"
The Ystradyfodwyg connection is also a possibility as he went there to manage a cinema in 1913 He met and married my grandmother who lived in Tylorstown.Did he go there to visit relatives? I wish I knew!!
I was interested in the Chipping Norton idea. Perhaps the 1901 census should read this. I will look at the baptisms for there. I have looked at all those from Cheltenham with no luck. I look forward to the 1911 census!
Thank you everybody

The military link and Tenby / Pembroke area seems quite strong for both of these Forest related ( if only a touch) family branches ...
