Kelly's Directory of Oxfordshire describes Spelsbury as "A village on the Evenlode with the hamlets of Dean, Ditchley, Fulwell and Taston forming a parish in the Banbury division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Chadlington, rural district, county court district and rural deanery of Chipping Norton, arch-deaconry and diocese of Oxford. Spelsbury village is about 1 1/2 miles north from Charlbury Station, on the Oxford and Worcester section of the railway, 5 miles south east from Chipping Norton and about 17 miles north west by road from Oxford."
