History of the NELMS family (General)

My name is Daniel Nelms, and I have been doing genealogy research on my family off and on for numerous years now. The farthest I have been able to reach back (for certain) is Nathaniel H. Nelms, who was born in 1834 in Georgia, USA.

His father could possibly be William Nelms married to Ann Shepard.

And I also have this information (which is what led me to the Forest of Dean Area)

1790 RS Elbert Nuberg David BBB22 115 & William BBB 4 115 Nuberg===11-11-1793 Joseph Blackwell & Sally Chandler Blackwel, his wife ,to Julius Christler for $40.00 both sides of Nelms Bigg Branch granted 1-6-1791 420 ac signed Joseph & Sally
Blackwell, wit. Reuben McClary & Donton Blackwell.==Nelms came from Gloucestershire on West Coast of England from Forest of dean. Coat of Arms at Berkeley Church 3 elm trees "Dwellers near the elms" "Property with 9 Elms"

This information seems really scrambled, and the original poster of this information on rootsweb.com never responded to my questions on where this information came from.

I am (hoping) to find the direct link between Nathaniel (or William if William actually was Nathaniel's father) and the Forest of Dean area. It seems certain that one of my ancestors must have came over at some point in the 1700s to the US, or possibly earlier.

I am not sure if anyone has any information that could possibly help me. Thanks so much!

If you put the name Nelms into the 'Search Forum' above, you will show numerous links to Nelms threads. Good luck

Daniel,

I also am trying to establsih a link to Forest of Deans. I have traced my family back to around the border of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire (Great Haseley, Great Milto, Ickford, Shabbington) and feel certain there is a link into Gloucestershire.

I,m butting in. Recently put a search on the forum. See Frederick Nelmes. My task is to find out why George Nelms family go over to Pennsylvania. My gut feeling is a relative and work. My George Nelms was born Lydney. He had a brother William born 1860. Thanks.

I don't know if the spelling variation is important, or if this could lead you anywhere, but there is a photo at www.sungreen.co.uk/Lydney/Lydney_Cross_Group.html which includes a Jim "Nelmes", landlord of the Cross Keys pub, Lydney. (I happened to be aware of this as the picture also includes my grandfather.) I can't date this photo at the moment but it must be between 1946 and 1960. You may also find it helpful, possibly more so, to see a post by Yvonne Chalker at genforum.genealogy.com/nelms/messages/1228.html and other stuff you'll find by googling "nelms lydney"
