BEACH family tree and branches

Hello everyone - For a couple of years now I have been researching my family, in my case the Beach tree and branches.

Although my family have not moved very far, they tend to criss-cross between the Monmouth town area, South Herefordshire, and the Forest, and that ads to the work when searching One thing anybody researching the same areas may need to know is that births etc. for most of what is often called West Dean are registered in Monmouth, and if you are looking for family in the Forest along the River Wye in the area below Ruardean, you may find some registrations in Ross.

Now my main family is BEACH and I have collected quite a lot of info, the earliest entry is 1545 for the will of Joane Beche of Newent, in the next 60 years first the "a" is added to the name, and later the "e" on the end removed. Beche came from "de la Beche" a family that arrived in the years after the Norman Conquest, though they were not Normans but Flemish and came from an area on the French / Belgium border, beche apparantly means spade, not very grand.

Hello Fred!

I am Heemi Porou & I live in NZ. My mother's maiden name is Beach, and we have researched a little into our ancestry. Here's a really basic version of what we have - if anything seems to match up we'd be really pleased.

Samuel Beach b.1727 = Elizabeth ?
Samuel Beach b.1756 = Susannah Smith c.1768
Humphrey Beach 1791-1864 = Elizabeth Williams
Milson Beach b.1838 = Lucy Haviland b.1849
Hubert Beach 1870-1940 = Heneriata Potiki
Albert Beach 1905-1974 = Dahlia Perenara 1930-
Kathleen Beach 1951- = Henare Porou 1950-

And then there's me. So yeah, if any of this is familiar to you it would be great to hear back from you sometime. I don't suppose many people would be expecting a reply like this! Cheers.

Sorry I was so slow to reply. I know this family, and my family lived so close that it is hard to imagine that there isn't a link.

Back in the 60's we had relatives visit from NZ, Hawk Bay is all I can remember of the address, but they may have been Rudges or Rogers.

Milsom, was his wife born in Guernsey? I seem to remember seeing them somewhere. Fred

Yes I've wondered about Milson's wife - Lucy Haviland. I can only assume that her family is part of the lot which can trace its name and its variations to Guernsey. I haven't checked - I'm fairly new at this.

It would be great to find a link. I'm astounded that, over so many generations, people seem to stay in the same county. Milson of course made the big move to NZ - it's been quite hard to trace anything from this end. Let's hope there is a link between our families - and rely on some evidence.

I've tried researching not only the names we have, but siblings also. Do you know if the Beach/Beache/Beche family can trace its ancestry from that family which is responsible for those big statues? I found them somewhere on the net.

Our family here in NZ considers itself Maori - the indigineous peoples of NZ, and which one of Milson Beach and Lucy's sons married into. Three times! We have largely lost any traces of being descended from Forest of Dean stock - we simply weren't aware. Our ancestors here also lived generally within the same 'county'. That tradition still exists with some families but it's fading.

Where should we start to try make a link? Hawke's Bay is the place you're thinking of. I live about 2 1/2 hours away, in Gisborne and will be travelling there soon. I'll keep an eye out for some relations okay.

Yup that's the one alright. I think Lucy Havliand's father Henry built an Inn somewhere... Which had something to do with a monastery. It was in use as late as 2002 I think.

You mentioned Rohan Fletcher. He and I turn out to have common great great grandparents - Milson Beach and Lucy Haviland. So our grandparents are cousins. I think that makes me Rohans third cousin? I dunno the system but yeah we're tied up somewhere along the line.

The monastic connection could well be with the famous Fleece in Westgate St Gloucester.

HISTORY: the undercroft, ( stone vaulted cellar) an exceptionally fine and early surviving
example of its type which bears comparison with examples elsewhere in the country and
in Northern Europe, is the surviving part of a merchant's house in a property which originally
extended westward to Bull Lane, and recorded in the St Peter's Abbey rental of 1455 as a
great tenement that had belonged to Benedict the Cordwainer in the reign of Henry III.

The property is believed to have been developed as an inn in c1500 by the abbey, and is
first recorded as the Golden Fleece Inn in 1673. Considerable alterations and repairs
were recorded between 1772 and 1778.
