Leadbeater, Moses born 1845 or Mary Elizabeth born 1847 (General)

by tlross75, Saturday, April 03, 2010, 05:31 (5140 days ago)

Greetings from Nashville!

I'm looking to share information on the Leadbeater family. They emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada sometime between 1881 and 1884. I do have a record of them in the 1881 census and know that my Great Grandmother, their daughter Sarah Ann was born in Nova Scotia.

From what I can find Moses and Mary Elizabeth (who went by Bessie) had at least 8 children including my great grandmother.

I'm looking for Moses's parents and believe Mary Elizabeth's maiden name was Eacup.

many thanks!

Hi
I have a slight connection with the EACUPS family as my grandfather`s brother married Rose EACUPS in 1895 at Ruardean. She may have been married before as she had a son Edgar EACUPS. I have a little more info. on them but no Elizabeth

Mmmm... I wonder if there is a connection. I know Elizabeth moved to Nova Scotia before her daughter Sarah was born... or at least Sarah's birth certificate shows her being born in NS. Maybe a relative but not a direct line???

Thanks,

I believe Sarah Ann Leadbeater b 1884 was a sister to my grandmother Florence b 1882 in Cinderford, East Dean. They moved to Nova Scotia in 1883. Father was Moses and mother was Elizabeth Eacups. Can you confirm Elizabeth's father was William Eacups? What was he father's wife's first name and 2as her maiden name Helps?

Can you confirm Elizabeth's father was William Eacups?

Hi and welcome to this forum and website.

Slowhand's earlier post in this thread indicates Elizabeth's parents in the 1851 & 1861 Census were William and Ann.

Searching this website's Parish Records database gives Elizabeth's marriage to Moses Leadbeater in 1866, it records her father as William. The full transcription was posted earlier in this thread by Slowhands.

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/index.php/parish-records-search

Using this link I think this is William's Burial Record.

So born abt 1807 ?

Ancestry has their Marriage Record, at Ann's home town of Eastington (across the Severn nr Stonehouse) as per the Census',

Name: William Hiccups
Marriage Date: 15 Jun 1834
Spouse: Ann Davis
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Eastington, Gloucestershire
Register Type: Bishop's Transcripts
Witnesses: William Guest? and Eliza Hiccups

For completeness, here they are in the

1841 Census for Littledean
Given Name Surname Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth County Birth Country
William Ecups 27 1814 Male Collier Gloucestershire England
Ann Ecups 28 1813 Female Gloucestershire England
Mary Ecups 7 1834 Female Gloucestershire England
Charles Ecups 2 1839 Male Gloucestershire England
William Ecups 2 W 1841 Male Gloucestershire England

The Census is neatly-written and legible, so it's annoying to me that I cannot readily identify all the placenames given against many of the dwellings including this one. It looks like they and their immediate neighbours are at "Great Elm?", which is located between "Littledean Hill" and "Bailey" judging by the adjacent census entries. Searching the British History site confirms it is probably "Elm", saying
"The north-west end of the village centred on Nightingale's Cross, so called by 1591, where the road forked for Callamore and St. White's; a great elm standing there was a prominent landmark in the 18th century."
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol5/pp159-173

So they lived near the base of Littledean Hill, where the main road dropping from Cinderford swings right and levels into Littledean village on Broad Street, next to Littledean House Hotel.
See page 17 "Littledean House" of this site's Littledean gallery for the oldest photo I've seen of this end of Littledean. The road splits in the distance past the House/Hotel, the main branch going left up to Cinderford (St Whites), ie at "Nightingale's Cross". Old OS maps show this short section of road as "High Street", nowadays the re-modelled main road runs alongside it as it cuts across the original sharp corner.

Searching Ann using Ancestry(as other websites are struggling with the variety of spellings of this unusual surname) we find her Burial Record. It is indeed within this FoD site's PRs, which is actually Ancestry's source of data.

Thanks for these details. The variations in spelling from Hiccups to Eacups is interesting. Was this related to literacy or an intentional name change?

On one ancestry post for Moses Leadbeater, a William Helps is notes as grandfather. I now believe that this should be one and the same William Eacups. Can you confirm?

Thanks.

Hi,

1. re the literacy question, yes I think you're right, especially as Foresters drop their "H"s - I doubt the name change was intentional. I must apologise as I don't know where in the world you are (I suspect Canada given your post and times of posting ?), and I don't know how well you know the Forest and it's dialect. Assuming like many of the forum's users you're from abroad and maybe new to the Forest, then hopefully this old post of mine will help you. I've just checked out the links and thankfully they are all still working for me in the UK, hoepfully they will for you too, especially the audio clips.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/fodmembers/index.php?id=45039

2. When you say "ancestry post", do you mean a post on an Ancestry website forum, or one of their public trees, or what ?. Eitherway, I cannot properly answer without seeing it and in a full context - I'm not an expert or researcher about the Eacups family, so would have to research from scratch. If you can post more details, or an internet link, that would help us. However I will say that we've seen plenty of evidence to treat public trees with caution, sadly many researchers are too happy to copy other people's research without checking it's accuracy, sometimes errors do occur and are sometimes perpetuated to become "set in stone".

Hope this helps, Jeff

Go to HTTPS://family search.org and search for Moses Leadbeater born cinderford in 1846. You will see William Helps age 74 listed as grandfather. I now think this is William Hiccups or Eacups father of Elizabeth.

Yes I live in Calgary Canada and home to visit the Cinderford and Little Dean area in June 2017. How could we hook up for a chat about history?

Hi Don, thanks for clarifying. I've found the Familysearch site entry you refer, for completeness for the records/thread here is their transcription.

1881 Census for East Dean (aka Cinderford), W-o-S District, Glos

Household Role Gender Age Birthplace
Moses Leadbeater Head M 35 Collier Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
Elizabeth Leadbeater Wife F 36 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
John Leadbeater Son M 10 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
Martha Leadbeater Daughter F 8 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
Timothy Leadbeater Son M 6 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
William Leadbeater Son M 3 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
Fred Leadbeater Son M 1 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England
William Helps Grandfather M 74 Widower General labourer Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England

My first thought on reading your reply was maybe there was a transcription error. When I started my FH studies abt 6 years ago, I was initially wary of the LatterDay Saints aka FamilySearch site, as many text books etc urged caution with as it was "very prone to transcription errors". However, since then I've used the site a lot and found it very useful indeed, not least because it's so user-friendly and also free. I've also seen several examples of subscription sites such as Ancestry also making transcription errors, some of which truly beggar belief.

However in this instance I've looked up the actual Census image on Ancestry and the entry for William clearly reads "Helps". As to what the Census official heard when he wrote down the name, who knows ?.
The Ancestry site offers other Records which they feel may be linked to William, including the following, at this moment I'm unsure as to if it is definitely your man.

1871 Census East Dean Glos.
Household schedule number Given Name Surname Relationship Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth City Birth County Birth Country

99 William Eacups Head Widower 58 1813 Male Gen'l labourer Upton St Leonards Gloucestershire England
99 Henry Eacups Son 18 1853 Male Cinderford Gloucestershire England
99 Emma Eacups Daughter 14 1857 Female Cinderford Gloucestershire England
100 Charles Eacups Head 32 1839 Male Upton St Leonard Gloucestershire England
100 Rachel Eacups Wife 25 1846 Female Upton St Leonard Gloucestershire England
100 Mary Ann Eacups Daughter 3 1868 Female Cinderford Gloucestershire England
100 William Eacups Son 1 1870 Male Cinderford Gloucestershire England

From memory I think this is the same man, thankfully it's a rare surname locally hwoever it's spelt. As the following extracts show, I've looked at several adjacent pages of this 1871 Census trying to find clues to street names etc to find exactly where William lived, hence I accidentally found these other people who maybe related. I'm a little bemused as to why the Census offical hasn't recorded street names, hard to believe but maybe they hadn't been named by then, or even in the 1881 Census, I need to get my old maps out !?. Hence I've highlighted the Inns as they tend to stay put while people move house. (NB the Household Schedule Numbers do NOT relate to physical Street etc numbers, but are merely the order the official visited the houses. This Census runs to 44 pages and over 200 Schedule numbers).

The Nags Head has recently closed, it's just off Church Road, at it's halfway point between the town centre and St John's Church. The Dog Inn is long-closed, it was on the west end of Victoria Street not far from the Nags. The vast majority of occupations recorded in the adjacent Census pages agree with this placement, being colliers or iron foundry workers. Their workplaces were readily located below Church Rd, towards and in the valley of Cinderford Brook which runs south thro' Ruspidge and north thro' Bilson, all as clearly shown on this O.S. map from 1883.
http://maps.nls.uk/view/101453397

Thanks Don for leading me to the Dog Inn entry because this is an addition to my own researches, regarding the many William Jones in the Forest including several on my paternal line, some of which were innkeepers, and now I've found one in my hometown !.
Pictures of both pubs are on the GlosPubs site, cannot give direct links but enter just the pub name in the search box and you'll eventually find the relevant pages.

Hi MPG, hope you and yours are well, many thanks for your posts today which you hadn't posted when I started writing my first reply today (I was interrupted by a phonecall). Clearly we were both working/posting at the same time today so apologies if I've repeated your work, hopefully we both agree !. I couldn't fit my final offering into my original post today, which was going to be this;

While searching Ancestry for William Helps as per my previous post, the Ancestry site also pointed me towards this Baptism record which they feel is relevant;

Name: William Hampps
Baptism Date: 17 Mar 1816
Parish: Upton St Leonards, Gloucestershire, England
Parish as it Appears: Upton St Leonards
Father: Noah Hampps
Mother: Mary Hampps
Register Type: Parish Registers

In this instance the record HAS been incorrectly transcribed, the actual PR image is clearly "Hacupps". Another Ancestry user has suggested this equates to "Eacupps".

-------

So clearly it confirms MPG's cd Baptism record.

==============

Don, thanks for confirming where you are, I asked purely because it helps us to know your terms of reference when replying, especially with subjects like the local dialect, I hope my reply helped in that respect and the various links could be accessed in Canada. I studied Canada at some length at school, and met some members of the Calgary Youth Orchestra who performed there ( Royal FoD Grammar School, nr Coleford) while touring the UK in about 1977, so I've always had an interest in your country. Probably the best way for you to "hook up" about history is via these forum pages, as it would then become part of a useful database for others to benefit from and also contribute towards. Indeed, you can gain information about almost any subject pertaining to the Forest, including discussions about visiting from overseas, suggested tourist spots etc, the many cases of Foresters emmigrating for work, all just by searching this forum. If that doesn't help, then do please feel free to ask and we'll all do our best to help you. Not forgetting to also use the rest of this great website, such as the old maps and photo galleries, newspaper articles and e-books, etc etc, there's so much here for the finding !
Many thanks, Jeff.

He was a Yorkshire coal miner. Thanks again!

No problem Don, that's what we're here for.

Please be advised I've just edited my first post of yesterday, adding a link to the 1883 Ordnance Survey map of Cinderford. It didn't "click" in my sometimes-dim head until today how most of the town's population around that time was still condensed into the triangle of Victorian terraced streets south of the modern town centre, such as Woodside & Pembroke, and Flaxley Street to their south; I suspect the families I listed from the 1871 Census lived in these streets.
http://forest-of-dean.net/gallery/cinderford/pages/page_57.html
http://forest-of-dean.net/gallery/cinderford_2/pages/page_56.html

Modern maps show how much later housing eg Woodside Avenue c1950 has now infilled south of Flaxley to meet Stockwell Green and Cinderford Bridge near St Johns church, the original "centre" of the town.
The 1883 map was accessed from this great website, to view later maps click on the Right Hand side images.
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=12&lat=51.8186&lon=-2.4818&layers=6&b...

To pull-up maps from adjoining areas just click within that area's red outline box to "turn it blue". Do hope this link and site works for you in Canada.

Thanks for these links. The first gallery link shows my great aunt Mary Ann Tingle nee Leadbeater younger sister of my grand father Moses Leadbeater. Great picture. Will have to look up Tingles when we visit Cinderford!
