Hi Hilary,
I couldn't add this to your thread as it's already been "locked", I don't understand why but this happens automatically after 20 posts.

Trying to find out any links between the Artillery and Chepstow, a quick Google of "Chepstow Royal Field Artillery" shows this site, the Chepstow War Memorial lists a few from the RFA amongst the other brave men commemorated. I guess this suggests it was a good recruiting town for the RFA, I suspect due to the number of local lads with horse skills.

Similary these other Monmouthshire Memorials.

etc.
I imagine this trend is common for many agricultural areas such as ours.
Hope this helps, Jeff.

Farming & Horses abt WW1

Hilary, this wonderfull site's not just about the Parish Records and the Forum, there's a host of other great items to be seen including old documents, newpaper articles, EBooks, etc etc. An example is this interesting article which describes farming times around Hewelsfield, very near Woolaston, at about the time of the Great War. It particularly mentions the buying off horses for the Army.

This and other great items can be searched from the search engine accessed from the menu on the lefthand edge of the homepage.

Recruiting in Forest for WW1 Artillery, part 2.

A coincidence, but I have just researched one of my 'unknown' postcards.
It is a picture of 36 men standing outside Athlone Castle, the writer is marked with an X and he signs as AB 30550, the card was posted in Athlone October 1914, and sent to ' Dear old chum' Mr. E HARWOOD, Woodspring, Brockweir.

30550 is a valid Regiment number and The National Archive lists many, but only one with the initials AB.

ALFRED BULLOCK RFA (Driver)
Athlone Castle was a training base for the RFA.

This could be him,

Alfred Ernest BULLOCK married 1928 Westbury on Severn

Lucy POPEJOY ( see previous thread )

As far as I am aware, my family has no connections, but another coincidence was that my BRYANT family rented Church Cottage, Brockweir, for the summer of 1914, perhaps the mail was mixed up.

I really enjoy sending off copies of postcards and photos to all who are interested, any takers for this one?

Regards,

MJL

Hello there, thanks for the offer of a photo copy.My father was in the artillery in WW1 and at one time was stationed at ATHLONE.I have no photos of this period of his life so would be most pleased if I could find him on there.
