5341, Private Eugene Richard BIDMEAD 1896-1917

For anyone with a WW1 interest or connected to the BIDMEAD family from Newent, one of Eugene's WW1 medals has turned up after being found during a house clearance.

It is now with www.qcmilitaria.com. If anyone is interested in buying the medal before it goes on an auction site, it would be worth contacting them this week.

I've looked-up Pte Bidmead in the old newspapers, and so far have found just this one mention in the Gloucester Journal. I've included the complete article in my next post, as this long list of casualties is such a shocking reminder of that terrible war. What makes it seem even worse is that this weekly list was a "routine" one, and during what was considered a "quiet" period of the War with no major offences so higher casualties !

The Glosters website states;
"In March 1917 the Gloucesters still had twelve battalions on the Western Front, several of which, in various Divisions, were to be involved in the fighting that took place during the cautious pursuit of the German Army as it withdrew back towards the heavily fortified Hindenburg Line.

61st Division (mockingly referred to as the "Sixty-Worst" by some) included 2/4th, 2/5th and 2/6th Gloucesters. Second-Lieutenant W.G. Shipway enlisted as a private soldier with 4th Battalion in 1914, and after his commission in 1916 was posted to 2/4th Battalion, as he explained in his memoir:

"I was posted to the 2/4th Battalion Gloucesters (Territorials) part of the 61st Division (we called it the sixty-worst). This was a second line division which got very few replacements for casualties or wastage. It was not used in main attacks usually but for holding line after attacks and in quiet sectors."

Pte Bidmead was also in the 2nd/4th Glosters, his death shows that even life in this so-called "second line" Division was still very dangerous.

The Glosters museum and website have a letter home from the Front dated 24th February 1917 which mentions the death of Eugene Bidmead. It was written by 20314 Private Thomas Charles Stanley Beard, also of 2/4th Battalion Glosters.

Sadly the Army Records show that Thomas Beard, who also enlisted in Newent, would die at the Front just a few months later.

Friday week's casualty lists contained the names of 51 officers (22 dead) and 526 rank and file (202 dead). The officers' list included of the Roval Navy, among the killed Commander Francis H. H. Goodhart. D.8.0., R.N. Lieut.-Colonel R. B. Bradford, V.C. (Durham Light Infantry) and Lieut. H. J. P. Howard (Scots Uuards). grandson of Lord Strathcona, are reported wounded. The rank and file wounded included 10922 J. Hall. Grenadier Guards, Cheltenham.
A later list included the following:— Wounded: Sec.-Lieut. 11. L. C. Gill, M.C., Gloucestershire Regt., attached Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

Mr. Macpherson stated in Parliament on Wednesday that large number of the men of the London Rifle Brigade have been missing since July 1st. The only conclusion was that they were dead, and steps would be taken to communicate with the relatives.

Thursday night's casualty lists contained the names of 27 officers.(9 dead) and 1,007 rank and file (334 dead). The latter included the following :—
Died of wounds : Gloucester Regiment 20706 T. Bumford. Bristol; 22647 R. A. Pullin, Chippenham. Wounded : Gloucester Regiment —4910 Corpl. E. H. Isom, Bristol."

FreeBMD suggests Gilbert was born in Aston, Warwickshire abt December 1890.
He is remembered on the Roll of Honour at Double View School, Cinderford, and the town's War Memorial in the Triangle.

Regarding the somewhat odd mention of the London Rifle Brigade, and their heavy losses some 6 months earlier, they fought in the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916.

Further to the above, and my post elsewhere today, it seems that GlosBMD is indeed working correctly, or at least in part, even from my ancient PC.

I've found that the general "Simple Search" feature is NOT working, but the individual "Advanced Search..." for Birth, or Marriage, or Death, IS working.
