Boughton Family HIstory (General)

by Sue Ablett, Friday, November 20, 2020, 22:35 (1344 days ago)

Just wondering if anyone has a photo of Locquiers Farm, Drybrook, that they would be willing to share. My great grandfather, Abraham Boughton took on the farm in 1908 originally, he and his wife Ada both died there, and others in the family continued to farm there until recently. I'm writing up the Boughton Family History and would love to include a photo of the farm. (My mum was a Boughton, daughter of Alfred Thomas son of Abraham.

Boughton Family HIstory

Hello Sue, this is Greg Robinson from Canada. I am trying to gather some family history and say that you have a connection to the Boughton name. My Grandma (Vera Robinson - born Robbins) lived at Rose Cottage in Weston-Under-Penyard as a child. I have an old bible from a lady named Lizzie (Elisabeth) Boughton and I think that we are related to her. Just not too sure how, as both my Father and Grandma have passed away.

Regards,
Greg

Hi Sue - there are several of Alfred (Fred) Bouhgton's handwritten memoirs at Dean Heritage Centre in Soudley. We are trying to trace closest living relatives so that we can talk to them about copyright. Do you have contacts for any of them?

Fred Boughton

I was born in the Forest of Dean about a mile from Mitcheldean on March 5th, 1897, and lived in the district until 1928. I knew Mitcheldean from A to Z 50, 60 and 70 years ago. It was then a typical small Gloucestershire town with narrow streets and old fashioned black and white houses. The upstairs was two feet wider than downstairs, and some of the houses had half doors.

1897, the year of the Diamond Jubilee, during the reign of our beloved Queen Victoria. Britain was then a mighty nation because we honoured God and our Queen. Our armies and navies had made an Empire upon which the sun never set.

At school we sang with pride in our hearts "Rule Britannia" and, because formerly our ships were made of Forest oak, "Heart of Oak are our ships".

I can recall my happy childhood days. In the early summer morning, before the mist was rising, it was pleasant to hear the birds cooing and chirping in the woods and hedges. A robin would come and tap the window asking for crumbs. As I walked through the woods and fields l was interested to see how. Nature changed everything daily. I often saw birds building their nests and the old birds feeding their young. The young ones never died of hunger because Nature always supplied enough for their needs.
