William CARTER born Arlingham about 1641 (Parish Records)

by Susan_King @, Wednesday, September 21, 2022, 01:24 (582 days ago)

I am looking for the baptism of William CARTER born Arlingham (I think) about 1641. He died there in 1706 and his tombstone says at the age of 65. He was married there in 1681 to Joan Ailaway of Westbury. Are there baptisms on this site for Arlingham around that time? I got an internal server error 500 when I tried to access the coverage page.

Anything that anyone can tell me about the CARTER'S of Arlingham around this time would be also very helpful, or about baptism parish record existence. I believe no bishops transcripts were done 1641 to 1660.

There is a dodgy Ancestry tree showing father to be Giles CARTER. This info has been copied to FamilySearch but I know the tree has errors. No sources, I don't think. I don't have access to Ancestry. I have added what I know to FamilySearch ID LT63-NS9.

Thank you for this information, Richard, it is all new to me and worth further study. It looks like I'm going to need to do a lot more work on his kids to see if it ties into anything on the graves.

The will I find especially useful at first glance because of the match to Joane and his eldest son Richard. The year of 1710 is different than the note found about his grave, but the 1706 did have a ? after it due I think to legibility. But perhaps 1710 refers to the date the will was proved not written?

Any thoughts as to where I might proceed from here?

Hi,
Have you done a DNA test? Although it won't help you that far back unless you know some chaps who have the surname Carter and are known to be descendants. At least three will participants in the yDNA tests could be very useful.

Thank you very much for these details, some of them are our ancestors. Yes, I agree about the gaps and that has made it difficult for us to get our Carter and other ancestors sorted, along with the lack of wills and other primary evidence.

The transcripts in the database are from the parish register and cover the followin periods:
1539-1614, 1649-1887. The Bishops Transcripts have not been transcribed, as you`re interested I will update the parish registers with any additional information from the BTs, this will probably take me 4 to 6 weeks, I`ll keep you updated.

Hi Graham,

That's fabulous! There's a few of us who are also Carter descendants and we'd love to see the BTs transcribed if not access to the originals too if you could please divulge where they can be access? Are the BTs digitised and online yet? Sadly we lost mum in Feb 2023, she was my research buddy and she loved our genetic genealogy. I had to take a break for a while because the research stirred up emotions but I'm back researching Gloucestershire now, in between researching ancestors in other counties on both sides of my tree.

Title: The Carter family of Puckpool Farm, Arlingham
Description: A Collection of family and farm papers including surveys, account and sales particulars:

Date: 1800-1936
Physical Description: 28 Files

Immediate source of Acquisition: Documenbts deposited by D. J. Carter Esq.

Administrative/biographical background:

This collection relates to the Carter family who were owners or occupiers of Puckpool Farm, Arlingham, from c.1756 to 1938.
The property came to the family through the marriage of GILES CARTER of Arlingham, yeoman, with ANN HODGES, in 1756
By his Will (1792) his widow retained a life interest in the estate, and after her death in 1821, it passed to their eldest son William by whom it was heavily mortgaged.
Under the terms of his will (1833) it was inherited by his sons GILES and JOHN.
The stock, implements and household furniture were put up for sale in 1864 when JOHN CARTER bought most of the lots and settled accounts with his brother.
Although the farm was sold to NATHANIAL HAWKINS in 1888 and came on the market again after his death in 1910. the CARTER family continued to farm it as tenants until JOHN WILLIAM CARTER retired in 1938.
