Thanks very much for the info on the birth certificate. Although I have almost 1000 certificates, my research on this line has been largely with parish records and sometimes this can be subjective. The real answer is a birth certificate.

My great grandfather Walter Treherne was born 8 July 1854 Bream Meands to Charlotte Treherne, his baptism 13 Apr 1855 shows Charlotte "Single Woman" Father Not Stated. It is probable that Walter Treherne and your Great Grandfather George 1857 are brothers.

I need to get back to the drawing board.

I note that George was a boarder in 1871, have you found the census detail for 1861 ?
