Alfred James Williams d1973 Ross-on-Wye (General)
The only additional info I have is that he was a police sergeant, married, with at least one child, and living in Alton Road, Ross.

am I correct in thinking this information, esp regarding his family, came from the reports of his death, maybe the inquest ?
Like you I don't have full access to the 1939 Register, but I tried without any definite success to find Alfred using their free search facility. Hopefully one of our members can find him on the 1939 Register, altho' given his age I suspect his marriage was post 1939 if not post-war.
