Going back through the generations (General)
It's worth attempting to go back as far as you can. One branch of my family (not FOD) I now have traced as far back as the Tudors! (This is mainly because they lived in a very small geographical area for many generations and were married, baptised, buried in the same few churches). So it is possible where records exist it's just finding the records, once you find one record it leads to finding more I have discovered!
Try also the Mormon's Familysearch.com as it sometimes has generations of records, if not for a direct line it might for a related line of the family. Also some of the government websites have records of people going back years e.g. The National Archives. I found some good records on the Welsh Government/National Archives website regarding wills and land owning.
