Thanks for the update Margaret,
it's nice to know I appear to have got something right last night, insofar as Thomas being a Cornishman it seems. Sorry but I'm a little confused abt which Thomas it is ?. Using the Ancestry search screen plus LDS there are clearly SEVERAL Thos Daveys born in Cornwall between say 1862 and 1870. Similarly there are SEVERAL Thos Daveys in the 1920/30 etc US Census "born England" abt 1862-1870.

Yesterday I'd read the 1920 US Census that gave him as Thos M Davey aged 50, hence that was what I searched for last night and what I appeared to find in Thos Mark near Cardiff in 1901, a perfect fit I thought.

However, I see you've now taken him as Thos Nankivel born 1864 ??.

ie from LDS, which I've only just seen:

"England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975,"
name: Thomas Nankivel Davey
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 18 Oct 1864
baptism/christening place: St. Agnes (near Truro), Cornwall, England
birth date:

death date:
name note:

father's name: Sampson Davey
father's birthplace:

mother's name: Philippa

On re-reading the post re the US Census Returns, I see the 1930 Census gives him as plain Thomas Davey aged 58, whereas the 1940 Census gives him as Thomas N. Davey aged 72 !?!. HELP !
QUESTION: do you have access to read the actual US Census forms, to decide once and for all what his middle name initial actually is ?

Meanwhile, how do you know which Thos is yours ?

I've just searched again for Thos N Davey b1864 on the 1901 UK Census on LDS without finding any "N"s at all, ditto on the 1911 UK Census on Ancestry. I cannot find him. Perhaps he's already crossed the Atlantic, or maybe he's just one of the several Thos Daveys (no middle initial given) I've seen listed in various households but ALL still in their home Cornwall/Devon area so NOT near Florence ?. (Thats assuming of course he's met Florence in the UK before they married in the US, why else would she travel there alone ?).

I must say I thought finding Thos Mark Davey very near Cardiff in the 1901 census was relevant, especially as he was THE hit amongst several also-rans.

As I posted yesterday it seems to me that if possible the emmigration records for Thomas really do need finding, so we know when he leaves the UK Census's and enters the US ones. I realise you've posted one record, for which the given age doesnt particularly match your associated birth; please, how do you know these are correct ?. Surely this young arrival at NY would accurately know his age ?. If he had a middle name wouldn't he give it on arrival (sorry, I don't know how precise these pasenger list records are). Either way it seems quite literally a needle in a haystack given the sheer numbers of Thos Daveys entering the US. Yes I see the Thos arriving is from Cornwall, but this man's given age differs from the LDS record above by 6 years !

To recap, according to LDS there are half a dozen or more "possible" Thomas Daveys born "England" in the US Census of the approximate birthdate, so plenty of room for confusion. Thankfully many of them go thro the US Census' with wives so some can be discounted, but even so if he had been married before Florence then ???.

Meanwhile, this may be your man, off LDS, but presumably not Nankivel:

"United States, New England Naturalization Index, 1791-1906,"
Thomas Davey, 1906

name: Thomas Davey
event: Naturalization
event date: 1906

birth year: 1867

nara roll number: 8

Finally, do you have any views as to whether Florence Priscilla A. MORGAN born Cardiff Sep 1903 actually is your Florence's daughter as per my post ?

I do hope this helps. Personally I'm very confused now, and it's very late so I look forward to hopefully hearing from your later today.

LATER PS:

Re your belief it is Thos NANKIVEL Davey, is this because you've seen the following ?. I've just searched all "Thos N Davey" on FreeBMD and find:

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1864 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAVEY Thomas Nankivel Truro 5c 162

Now given the very unusual middle name this must be the same man, surely ?

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Mar 1906 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BREWER Annie Pontypridd 11a 768
Davey Thomas Nankevill Pontypridd 11a 768
James Mary Pontypridd 11a 768
Pritchard Daniel Pontypridd 11a 768

AND HE'S IN PONTY !!
Sadly without a certificate don't know who marries who here. I've searched the area for likely births, none for mother Brewer (altho several in Cornwall for years to follow), several for mother James in South Wales altho not Ponty or Cardiff, BUT James is a VERY common surname there so no proof.

Great record you think, or at least I know I did !.

HOWEVER he's there in 1906, whereas your passenger record shows "him" to be sailing to NY in 1892, so ????.

Food for thought methinks (or in my case a very late supper or early breakfast, goodnight!).
