Double Wedding:- Two Brothers Marry Two Sisters at Newnham

There is a romantic touch about a double wedding that took place by special licence at Newnham Register Office.

Two brothers married two sisters, and no one except the four new anything about it, each couple acting as witnesses for the other's ceremony.

The parties were Mr George James BOWDLER and Miss Lilian ROBERTS and Mr Reginald Francis BOWDLER and Miss Gladys ROBERTS

The bridegrooms are sons of Mr and Mrs Sidney BOWDLER, of the Swan Hotel Cinderford and the brides are daughters of Mr and Mrs Albert ROBERTS of Sandley[Soudley?]

There was a series of happy surprises when they arrived at the Swan Hotel after the ceremony

Mr Sidney BOWDLER greeted the party with the remark "Hello, you look as if you have been to a wedding"

Then one of the brides said to Miss Gladys BOWDLER, a sister of the the bridegroom, "How would you like me for a sister-in-law?"

This was taken as a joke, and the significance of the query was not appreciated until she removed the glove from her left hand. The surprise had only just taken root when the same process was applied by the other bride.

Mrs BOWDLER received them warmly and said "That's two more daughters"
