Strides (General)

I wonder if we shouldn’t be looking a little further north than Sutridge. There is an image of Jesse’s birth certificate on Ancestry which, to me, reads ”Slads Longhope” as the birthplace. The progression of the 1861 Census seems to be from Blaisdon Rectory through the village and then back to the Red Hart Inn and the School. After that it goes out to Velt House, and then two cottages before arriving at The Mount. This latter is in the Nottswood Hill area, just south of Little London (some maps show two places named as such within a short distance of each other).

Next is another cottage, followed by Rough Lease which is marked on modern maps as being just where the well next to the Ley Brook (just under the name of Little London) is marked on the map above. Six cottages on from that is the Cockayne’s residence. Just the other side of Little London is an area called The Slade on old maps and The Slad on modern ones although it’s not absolutely clear where its boundaries might have been. After that there are sixteen more cottages before we are back with named places in Blaisdon Parish (Pimbury, White Hall, New House Farm, Stanley Farm, Brickhouse Farm). The area seems to be just where the parishes of Longhope, Blaisdon and Huntley meet.
