Albert PHELPS 1863 Rudford the Clergyman (General)

Thank you for your reply. As previously stated, this particular research is being undertaken for a lady called Rosemary, who is a descendant of Albert Edwin Phelps. I am involved in the search as we also have Phelps in our tree, both in Gloucestershire and Yorkshire, but at this point we do not know if the families are connected.
We are trying to find out who was the father of the Albert Edwin Phelps - the Clergy man who was a missionary in China. Slowhands was, as always, a huge help but one of the census he found is a puzzle. I believe it was the 1881 census, which showed an Albert Phelps, occupation dairy man, with two of his sons as "Painters". It seems to me that at the age of 18 the Albert Phelps shown on this particular census would have been in College studying for the Church. Can you shed any light on this mystery?
