My mother though born and bred in the Forest of Dean was in Domestic Service at Flaxley Abbey home to Lord and Lady Crawley Bovey. I know that a book's been written about Flaxley and the Crawley Bovey family it might be a good starting point for you. The other place that I thought of is Bathurst Park in Lydney.
