Two other places around the Forest worth looking into for domestic servants are Clanna near Alvington (the Marling family) and Oaklands Park near Blakeney (the Crawshaw family) but very often in the "upstairs downstairs" of times past many households had at least a maid. Girls also often travelled a long way to get such work. In 1911 my grandmother from Lydney was a domestic servant to a family who ran a sweet shop in Ross-on-Wye, and shortly before that two members of the Turley family from Viney Hill seem to have been similarly employed in Lancashire.
