In 1798 a small freehold estate of 43 a belonged to Stephen Colchester, of a
family settled in the parish from 1686, whose members were copyholders
during the 18th century. The estate descended from Stephen Colchester
(d.1846) to his daughter Ann (d.1882). Their farmhouse, named Colchester’s
Farm in 1884 and 1887, was owned in 1909 and later by Walter Hyett,
when it was known as Yew Tree Farm. It was renamed Colchester’s Farm by R.
S. Follett (d.1941), its owner in 1935. His daughter, Susan Follett, was owner
in 1994.
