Dear zgilding,
I am researching the Milliner family at present and came across this thread. Francis Sidney was the uncle of my father in law (now 89).

His mother was Bertha Evelyn Milliner b. 1901 and his grandparents were George Milliner and Emma Burrows. I recently told him about this story but he says he cannot recall anything like it. My father in law has already researched some of his ancestors (pre computer era) but the only thing he could find at the time which might relate to William was a 1811 marriage between Isaac Milliner and Sarah Bond in the parish of Hawkesbury entry no. 108. Also, an entry in the parish records of Old Sodbury, 13 Mar 1785 the baptism of Mary daughter of Isaac and Hannah Milliner.

As he says this is not conclusive proof that either of these Isaacs are Williams father and mother. Perhaps Isaac married twice but William always states that he was born in Bath, Somerset on the census returns.

This is an fascinating story that may have been handed down by William himself - a man of mystery? Certainly the 1841 census HO107 2993 931 18 5, Bendalls Building Lyncombe & Widcome, Bath adds to the mystery. It is difficult to read but it appears that he was living in a household of servants at the time perhaps he was a foundling that ended up here when he was older.

I would love to know if anyone has found out more about the mysterious William since this was first posted.
