My uncle has reliterated the story again over Christmas. He says that William was found wandering in the forest. He was about 3 years old and was dressed in velvet and had gold soverigns in his pocket. He / Frank was unsure as to wether William was his real name or was a name given to the family who took him in (presumably the Milliners). He did not mention any formal adoption, merely that he was brought up with the rest of their children.

We had assumed that this all happened in the Forest of Dean but further investigation and a chance correspondance with some distant cousins (the family several decades ago split in two - this half of the family live in America) - they have traced Williams father - Isaac Milliner and his mother Mary Beazer of Wiltshire however have their approximate birth dates and since Isaac was born around 1739 Leigh De La Mere and married in 1764 at Yatton Keynell, Wiltshire - (one known son Jacob born in Yatton in 1775) it seems unlikely that Isaac / Mary was his real parents (being somewhere between 70 - 80 yrs at the time of Williams birth.

Kindest Regards,
Zoe
