Hiam family (General)

by Janet25, Friday, September 14, 2018, 18:57 (2261 days ago)

My great,great,great Grandfather Thomas Hiam was born in Worcester in 1802 in October 1830 he married Elizabeth Hall he died in 1848.
They had three children, Matilda, Alfred Thomas ,and my great, great Grandfather George Thomas born in 1831.
I have had no success in tracing Thomas Hiam parents, I can recall my Grandmother often visiting relatives in Gloucestershire so I am posting on this forum.
Many thanks

? Looking at Public Members' Tree on Ancestry - no-one appears to have found this family in 1841 - Matilda christened 1843 - St Martins, Worcestershire.

? Was Thomas a Cordwainer - as was his son?

---

Thomas HIAM married Elizabeth HALL - 27 October 1830 at Saint Peter's Worcestershire

Looking at Family Search and well as Ancestry

George - 5 December 1830 - St Martins Worcester
Matilda - 26 April 1843 - St Martins Worcester
Alfred Thomas HIAM - christened 3 December 1845 - St Martins Worcester

? but also listed is

Caroline HIAM - christened 6 October 1828 at St Martins Worcester - parents: Thomas & Elizabeth

This family has a George HIAMS, born c1831, but the other children don’t seem to match. Could they have died young?

GR 1841 Census, Worcester, St Nicholas,

All born in county.

This does seem to be the correct family - as Caroline appears to have been christened before Thomas & Elizabeth married in 1830

Managing via Family Search to find this family on Ancestry 1841 census - the surname has been transcribed as HEARNS

Thomas appears - as you say - to be a Leather Dresser and born in the County

Thanks Mike.
In the 1871 census George Hiam and wife Mary have Thomas ( 15) Ann Elizabeth (5) Laura 3) and Elizabeth Rowe ( niece aged 13 ) who you mention living together.
The brick wall Thomas Ham I have found after going to Worcester archives that he married on August 5 to Elizabeth Braithwaite with witnessesCharles and Eliza Baker at Worcester St Helens.
Then married Elizabeth Hall on October 27 1830 at St Peter Worcester with witness Hannah Hazeley and David Hoesley.
So Caroline may have been born in wedlock in Oct 1828 not as I had originally thought.
Still no nearer finding his parents, but it’s all interesting .
A friend of mine found a Thomas Hiam born in 1807/8 on a public member tree married to Elizabeth Hall, that Thomas was born in Manea Cambridgeshire so perhaps I now need to research that route.
Many thanks for your input.

During my searches relating to early WILLIAMS in St B i found a HIAM around 1820 mixed in with the HIATT family in Coleford and Hiatt spelt in 6 different ways. I doubt if your Hiam will be as complex as Williams in The Forest however ! Good Luck.

by Janet25, Tuesday, September 18, 2018, 15:31 (2257 days ago) @ rsligi

Thank you for responding, a Hiam mixed in with Hiatt family interesting, I understand even Shakespeare is known to have used six different spellings of his name ! Before 1837 it was the recording clerks version of a given name that was recorded, local accents of those providing the verbal information made this event even more open to mis-interpretation.
Good luck with researching the Williams family.

This is the only entry I have come across which shows a connexion between this particular HIAMS family and Gloucestershire. However, I have not yet found them after their marriage.

BNA Worcester Journal - Saturday 09 May 1891
(also in the BNA Gloucestershire Chronicle - Saturday 16 May 1891)

MARRIAGES.

BALDWIN-HIAMS.— May 2, at Claines church, Worcester, by the Rev. A. S. Porter, Walter Baldwin, youngest son of the late Samuel Baldwin, of Newent, Gloucestershire, to Laura Matilda, second daughter of George Hiams, of Astwood Villas, Rainbow-hill.

Hi Mike,
like you I've been struggling to find ANY trace of both Walter or Laura, either before or after marriage, using the FoD PRs for Walter, and then FamilySearch for them both. The FoD PRs gave me no clear links for Walter and father Samuel, or an obvious birth for Walter.
Despite FamilySearch usually using being so good at offering name spelling variations etc, the only clear match I could find was the exact same Marriage Record you found. Interestingly that site gave records for "HYANS", but they were not our family.

Then tried FreeBMD to find the Marriage Record which clearly took place in 1891, as by now was beginning to think the newspaper record had got one of their names wrong !
Searching all Marriages for a Walter Baldwin to Laura (no surname) I found this record, as you know, and unlike FamilySearch, FreeBMD is very fussy wrt spellings;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1891
Baldwin Walter Droitwich 6c 528
Hiam Laura Matilda Droitwich 6c 528

Despite thinking it would make no difference to the findings, I then revisited FamilySearch looking for Laura HIAM not HIAMS, to my surprise I got instant hits ! eg

1881 Claines, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
George Hiam Head M 45 Bootmaker. Worcester, Worcestershire, England
Charlotte Hiam Wife F 36 Claines, Worcestershire, England
Ann Elizabeth Hiam Daughter F 15 Claines, Worcestershire, England
Laura M Hiam Daughter F 13 Claines, Worcestershire, England
Margaret J Hiam Daughter F 9 London, Middlesex, England
Maud Elizabeth Hiam Daughter F 2 Claines, Worcestershire, England
George H T Hiam Son M 0 Claines, Worcestershire, England

So reminding me that as good as FamilySearch is at offering surname spelling variations, it doesn't always offer some we might think are obvious...

So Laura was born abt 1868, perhaps Walter is abt the same or earlier, maybe in Newent area ??

Also from FamilySearch

Name Laura Matilda Hiam
Gender Female
Christening Date 02 Feb 1868
Christening Date (Original) 02 FEB 1868
Christening Place CLAINES,WORCESTER,ENGLAND
Father's Name George Hiam
Mother's Name Mary

Which fits;

1871 Claines, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
George Hiam Head M 39 Railway Porter. Claines, Worcestershire
Mary Hiam Wife F 28 Claines, Worcestershire
Thomas Hiam Son M 15 Railway Messenger. Claines, Worcestershire
Ann Elizabeth Hiam Daughter F 5 Claines, Worcestershire
Laura M Hiam Daughter F 3 Claines, Worcestershire
Elizabeth Rowe Niece F 14 Claines, Worcestershire

Think this explains why couldn't find Walter and Laura in Census' after their marriage;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1899
Baldwin Laura Matilda Worcester 6c 324
Cording John William Worcester 6c 324

Is this our Walter ?

Deaths Sep 1897
Baldwin Walter 32 Worcester 6c 146

So indeed was born abt 1865.

Not a rare name but maybe;

Births Sep 1865 (>99%)
BALDWIN Walter Newent 6a 216

GlosBMD confirms;

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
BALDWIN Walter NURTHEN 1865 Gloucester Gloucester, Newent 13 209

"Nurthen" ?
Struggling to find his parents, FamilySearch has a family in Newent in 1871 and 1881, Walter correct age, but gives his father as William not Samuel (wrt marriage report), and suggests his mother's maiden name is not Nurthen.

In case it's relevant post it for now;

1871 Newent, Gloucestershire, England

Thank you for all this information Mike, so many things I didn’t know. George Hiam my Great Great Grandfather married for the second time to Charlotte Jones who was born in Claines in 1845 their children were Maud Elizabeth, Margaret Emma and George Henry. Who married Eva Burdock from Bourton on the water.

Thanks Janet, you're very welcome, I just hope it helps and fits your family.

By pure coincidence while searching this forum'sold threads regarding another post today, I've just stumbled across this very sad tale of a Hyam family in Monmouth. I have no idea whether they are linked to yours but thought it may interest you.

https://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=42927

Sad to say accidents of this type involving small children in busy kit-chens were only too common in the past, just as nighttime fires involving bare lamp and candle lights were. This forum and this site's "Inquest" database has seen many similar cases. Indeed, far less serious but still highly distrsssing at the time, my own mother still has a large scold mark down her leg from a similar accident at home in the 1940s.

There are two newspaper entries which may refer to William Rowe, the husband of Sarah Hiams,

BNA Worcester Journal - Saturday 05 August 1865

COWARDLY ASSAULT AT CLAINES.— William Rowe, employed at Messrs. Hardy and Padmore's iron foundry, in this city, was summoned for assaulting Mary Ann Russell, a married woman, living in the Droitwich-road, Claines. The complainant, who appeared to be very ill, and was accommodated with a chair, stated that on the evening of the 24th of July, between nine and ten o’clock, she was standing in the turnpike road, when she heard the defendant coming down the road in a drunken state, cursing and swearing very badly. She retired into her own garden. The defendant came up, got over the wall into the garden, and asked for complainant’s husband, but on being told he could not see him, he struck complainant a severe blow on the jaw, and several other blows about the body. The defendant’s wife arrived on the spot, and tried to get him away; he then turned upon her and beat her. Case dismissed on defendant paying the costs.

BNA Worcestershire Chronicle - Wednesday 05 August 1863

ASSAULTING THE POLICE.—William Rowe was charged with assaulting P.C. Rudniski in the execution of his duty. The constable stated that between twelve and one that morning he watched the prisoner loitering about through Lansdowne and Lansdowne Crescent, and, as his movements were suspicious, he took him into custody. The prisoner was very violent and violently resisted. The wife of the prisoner was in court and entreated the Bench to deal leniently with her husband. She had, she said, four young children, and had only been confined three weeks. Mr. Superintendent Power recommended the prisoner to the merciful consideration of the court, in which he was joined by Rudniski, who said he did not wish to press the charge. He was, therefore, cautioned and discharged.

If this latter entry really is William and Sarah Rowe there should be two more children after Elizabeth Louisa and Sarah Jane.

From the GRO index this looks like them,
