Yes about 98% of my grandmother's male ancestors were coal miners. The clan didn't start to obtain white collar jobs till around the 1930's. Those from Gloucestershire were mainly in West Dean.

I double-checked Thomas' birth place with GRO and it in fact was Monmouth and not Cheltenham, and that makes much more sense! I must have misread something in FreeBMD because it too says Monmouth for his entry.
