Was it usual for someone born in Newland to move to Tredegar - was Newland a coal mining area?

Yes Mining was a Newland parish activity

On alot of the documentation that I have for Richard Jenkins he is down as a 'gentleman'. However in the parish records for the baptism of his son John Jenkins at Bedwelty in 1819 his father is down as a Collier/Inn Keeper at Tredegar. Surely a collier would not be classed as a 'gentleman'

Gentleman as in titled maybe not, but gentleman as in property owner then maybe
